Full Description
Pompeii Archaeological Park
Pompeii was a busy Roman town of around twelve thousand people until Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and buried it under ash and pumice. Rediscovered and excavated from the eighteenth century, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited places in Italy. A Pompeii guided tour is the best way to make sense of it, because the streets, shops and houses come alive when someone explains them.
Our guide leads the visit for about two and a half hours, and priority access means you skip the ticket queue that can stretch for a long time in high season. Many visitors search for Pompeii tickets and opening hours before travelling: the park keeps seasonal hours, so we plan the day around the entry slot and confirm it after booking.
What you see inside Pompeii
The tour follows the main route through the ruins: the Forum with its temples and public buildings, streets still marked by cart ruts and stepping stones, public baths, bakeries and street-side food counters, and richly decorated houses with mosaics and frescoes. The amphitheatre, built around 70 BC, is among the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres in the world.
The most moving sights are the plaster casts of victims, which show how sudden the disaster was. Your guide explains daily life, trade and politics in the town, and points out details like the shop counters and the famous mosaic warning of a guard dog. Is Pompeii worth visiting? For most guests it is the highlight of a trip to the Bay of Naples.
Climbing Mount Vesuvius to the crater
After Pompeii you drive up the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that caused the disaster and the only active volcano on mainland Europe. The road takes you close to the top, and then a hike on a gravel path leads to the crater rim at about 1,200 metres. The crater is roughly 500 metres wide, with steam vents and a huge view of the drop below.
Allow about an hour and a half for the hike including time at the rim. Entry to the crater is included in this Vesuvius day trip from Sorrento, and your guide explains the eruptions, from the famous one of AD 79 to the last in 1944. Access depends on weather and park rules, so bring a windproof layer even on hot days.
The Bay of Naples and planning your day
From the summit the whole Bay of Naples opens out, with the city, the Sorrento Peninsula and the islands of Capri and Ischia in the distance on a clear day. It is a satisfying contrast to the ruins: first the human story, then the geological force behind it.
This Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip from Sorrento is easy to organise because everything is arranged for you. Guests often ask about the best time to visit; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the hike, while summer is hot and crowded, so an early start and water are important.
