Full Description
Molentargius Saline Natural Park
Molentargius Saline Natural Park covers about 1,600 hectares of ponds, salt pans, reed beds and dry land between Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena, right behind the famous Poetto beach. It is one of the most important wetlands in Europe and protected under the Ramsar Convention, a mix of fresh water and salt water basins that attracts more than 250 species of birds through the year.
It is rare to find a nature reserve of this importance inside a city: from the park you see the buildings of Cagliari and the hill of Sella del Diavolo on the horizon. A Molentargius Park tour by electric minibus is the easiest way to see it, because the vehicle can enter areas closed to walkers and cyclists while keeping noise and disturbance to a minimum.
The flamingos of Molentargius
Since the 1990s greater flamingos have nested at Molentargius, and today it is one of the main breeding colonies in the Mediterranean, with thousands of birds in good years. They feed in the shallow salty water on tiny shrimp and algae, which give their feathers the pink colour, and you can see them all year round, with the largest numbers from spring to autumn.
The highlight of the tour is the protected ecosystem area, the main nesting site, reached only with official park guides. With the telescope and binoculars you can watch the birds feeding, preening and taking flight in pink clouds. Many people search for where to see flamingos in Cagliari, and this is the best answer: close, natural and respectful of the colony.
The Salt Route and the old salt pans
For centuries salt was Cagliari's white gold. The minibus follows the historic Salt Route through the basins where sea water was let in and evaporated by sun and wind, leaving crystals to be raked and stored. Old canals, sluice gates and the buildings of the former state saltworks, which closed in the 1980s, tell the story of an industry that employed generations of local workers.
Your guide explains how the salt pans worked and how their abandonment let nature return, creating the habitats the birds use today. The geometric shapes of the basins, often tinted pink by algae, make striking photographs, especially in the softer light of the morning and late-afternoon departures.
Fossil beaches of Is Arenas and the park's birdlife
The tour also stops at the fossil beaches of Is Arenas, ancient shorelines now far from the sea, where layers of sand and shells reveal how the coastline and the lagoon have changed over thousands of years. The area also keeps traces of the farming that once surrounded the wetland.
Beyond the flamingos, Molentargius is a birdwatcher's paradise. Look out for grey and little herons, elegant black-winged stilts and avocets, slender-billed gulls, cormorants and the purple swamphen, a rare blue-violet bird that has become a symbol of the park. Your environmental guide helps you spot and identify them through the telescope. No birdwatching experience is needed: the guide makes it easy and fun for beginners and children.
Planning your visit to Molentargius
Tours leave from the Infopoint of the park on the Cagliari side, with departures at 09:30, 10:15, 11:15, 12:00, 14:30 and 16:15. The best time to visit Molentargius for birds and soft light is the first morning departure or the last of the afternoon, when the flamingos are active and the heat is lower in summer.
The Infopoint is easy to reach by car or taxi from the city centre in about 10 minutes, and by bike along the cycle paths near Poetto. Arrive on time, as late arrivals cannot join. Drones, pets and feeding the animals are not allowed, so the park remains a safe place for wildlife. You can easily combine the tour with an afternoon on nearby Poetto beach.
