Overview
This entry ticket combines the Kościuszko Museum and the climb to the top of Kościuszko Mound, one of the best viewpoints in Krakow. Inside the 19th-century Fort 2 of the Krakow Fortress, a modern multimedia exhibition tells the story of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the national hero who fought for freedom in Poland and in the American War of Independence. Then a spiral path leads to the summit of the mound, where the city spreads out below: Wawel Castle, St. Mary's Basilica, the Cloth Hall and, on clear days, the Tatra Mountains. The ticket is valid for one day and you visit at your own pace, usually in about one and a half to two hours. It suits families, history lovers and anyone who wants the best views of Krakow.

Full Description
Kościuszko Mound: a monument made of earth
Kościuszko Mound was raised between 1820 and 1823 on Blessed Bronisława Hill in the green Zwierzyniec district, west of the Old Town, as a tribute to Tadeusz Kościuszko, leader of the 1794 uprising. Volunteers from all over Poland carried the soil by hand, and urns with earth from the battlefields where he fought were placed inside. The finished cone rises about 34 metres above the hilltop.
Krakow has a tradition of memorial mounds, but this is the most visited. A gently spiralling path, step-free but steep in places, leads to the summit in about 10 to 15 minutes. Many people ask whether Kościuszko Mound is worth visiting; for the view alone, it is one of the most rewarding things to do in Krakow.
The view from the summit
From the top you look east across the Vistula valley to the heart of the city. Wawel Castle and its cathedral stand out on their hill, and beyond them rise the twin towers of St. Mary's Basilica and the long roof of the Cloth Hall on the Main Market Square. Closer by, the green slopes of the Wolski Forest and the river bends complete the panorama.
On clear days, especially in autumn and after rain, the jagged line of the Tatra Mountains appears on the southern horizon, more than 100 km away. The best time to visit Kościuszko Mound is late afternoon, when the light turns golden over the city. Bring a jacket: the summit is open and often windy, even when the streets below are calm.
Kościuszko Museum in Fort 2
Your visit begins inside Fort 2 "Kościuszko", built by the Austrians around the mound in the mid-19th century as part of the vast Krakow Fortress. Its brick casemates now hold the modern permanent exhibition "Kościuszko - a Hero for Our Times", which uses multimedia, interactive displays, historical objects, film and theatre-inspired settings to tell his story.
You follow Kościuszko from his training as a military engineer to his role in the American War of Independence and his fight for a free Poland, and see why he remains one of the best-known figures in Polish history. Current temporary exhibitions are also included. Plan about 45 minutes to an hour in the museum before heading up the mound.
How to get to Kościuszko Mound and opening hours
