Full Description

Algar Seco, Carvoeiro

Algar Seco is a spectacular cluster of eroded limestone at the eastern edge of Carvoeiro, a former fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa. Steps and paths lead down through a maze of arches, ledges and natural rock pools filled with clear water, while a wooden boardwalk along the clifftops links it with the centre of Carvoeiro.

You spend about 45 minutes here with your guide, exploring the formations and taking photos. In calm weather the pools are a lovely spot to cool your feet. Algar Seco is one of the most photographed places in the Algarve, and visiting it early in the day, as on this tour, means softer light and fewer people.

Boneca Cave

Within Algar Seco lies Boneca Cave (A Boneca, 'the doll'), a small grotto with two openings in the rock that frame the Atlantic like windows. The name comes from the shape of the rock, which reminded local people of a doll's face. Standing inside and looking out at the blue sea is one of the classic Algarve photos.

Your guide shows you the way in and the best angles, and you have around 30 minutes to explore this area and other hidden caves nearby. The paths are rocky and uneven, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. On rough days the waves crash below the openings, a dramatic sight in itself, and a favourite moment for photographers.

Benagil Cave from above

Most people see Benagil Cave from a boat or kayak, but on this tour you see it from the top. A short walk from the village of Benagil leads to the clifftop where the famous round hole in the roof of the cave opens, and from the fenced edge you look straight down onto the golden sand and turquoise water inside.

It is a unique perspective and the best way to see Benagil without a boat. Your guide explains how the cave was formed and points out the wildlife along the cliffs. You spend about 45 minutes in the Benagil area, including the panoramic viewpoints over the village beach and the coast to the east and west.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) is the most famous coastal walk in the Algarve. It runs for nearly six kilometres along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, crossing small valleys that end abruptly in mid-air above the sea, hence their name.

On this tour you walk the scenic section from Benagil to Praia da Marinha with your guide, about 45 minutes on foot with sea stacks, arches and sinkholes along the way. The path is mostly easy but has some uneven and sloping parts, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, when the weather is mild.

Praia da Marinha

The walk ends at Praia da Marinha, often named among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. A staircase leads down from the clifftop to a cove of fine sand, framed by golden cliffs, a double arch and sea stacks rising from emerald water. The clifftop viewpoint above it is a perfect place for photos.

You have about 45 minutes here to relax on the sand, swim in the clear water or explore the rocks before the van takes you back to Albufeira. Bring swimwear, a towel and water. Boat trips and kayaks are not included, and there are few services on the beach, so a snack in your bag is a good idea.
