Full Description
Plaza de España in Seville
The Plaza de España is the most photographed square in Seville and the first stop for many day trips from the Algarve. It was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and forms a huge semicircle of brick buildings, towers and bridges around a canal, with tiled alcoves that represent the provinces of Spain. You can walk the length of the arc, cross the little bridges and look at the detailed tile work.
The square sits inside the leafy Parque de María Luisa, so it is a pleasant walk in any season. Give yourself time for photos in the morning light, and check with your guide how long the group stays. The Plaza de España is free to enter and open to the public, and it is one of the best things to do in Seville for first-time visitors.
The Royal Alcázar and the historic centre
The Real Alcázar is the royal palace of Seville and one of the finest examples of Mudéjar architecture in Spain, a style that mixes Islamic and Christian design. It is still used by the Spanish royal family, and its patios, carved ceilings and gardens are among the great sights of Andalusia. The palace is close to the cathedral and the old Santa Cruz quarter, where narrow lanes and orange trees fill the historic centre.
Alcázar tickets and queues can be a challenge on a busy day, and entrance fees are not part of the included list of this tour. If you want to go inside, ask us before you travel, because Real Alcázar opening hours and entry rules change by season. Even from the outside, the walls and gates give a clear sense of Seville's long history.
Triana: flamenco, ceramics and the riverfront
Triana lies across the Guadalquivir river from the centre and has always had its own character. It is known for its ceramic workshops, for sailors and bullfighters who lived here, and as one of the birthplaces of flamenco. Crossing the Isabel II bridge on foot gives you a good view of the river and the skyline of the old town behind you.
Along the riverfront and in the lanes behind it you find tile shops, small cafés and painted house fronts. If you like local crafts, Triana is a good place to look for hand-painted ceramics as gifts. Ask your guide which streets to explore in the time you have, and keep an eye on the meeting time back at the coach.
Shopping and free time in Seville
The tour leaves free time in the city centre, so you can choose between shopping, a long lunch or another sight. The pedestrian streets around Calle Sierpes and Calle Tetuán are the classic shopping area, with Spanish fashion brands, shoe shops, traditional hat makers and souvenir stores. Many travellers also visit the market areas and small shops for regional products.
Food and drinks are not included, so plan lunch in the free time and keep your budget in mind. One useful tip: Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal, so a meeting time given by the guide may need a mental check on your watch. Take your passport or ID card, comfortable shoes and a small bag for purchases.
