Overview
This small-group kayak tour takes you along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Portuguese coast, where the limestone cliffs of Arrábida Natural Park drop into clear, green-blue water. After a safety briefing at Sesimbra harbour, an English-speaking instructor leads you past caves, arches and rock formations inside the protected marine park to Ribeiro do Cavalo, a small beach where you rest, swim and enjoy a snack. The default morning option includes a return van transfer from central Lisbon, so it works well as a day out from the capital. It is a shared tour for up to ten paddlers and suits active travellers, couples and families who can swim. No previous kayaking experience is needed.

Full Description
Sesimbra harbour and fishing town
Sesimbra is a fishing town on the Setúbal Peninsula, about 40 km south of Lisbon, tucked into a sheltered bay below the Arrábida hills. Its harbour still lands sardines, octopus and the long, dark scabbardfish the town is known for, and the seafront is guarded by the seventeenth-century Fortress of Santiago. High above, the medieval castle walls crown the ridge and give a sweeping view of the coast.
Your kayak tour starts at the outdoor kayak centre at the harbour, where the instructor checks your equipment and gives a short safety briefing before you launch. If you take the harbour option, you can reach Sesimbra by car or by the regular bus from Lisbon. After the tour, the seafront cafés and grilled-fish restaurants make it easy to stay longer, which is why this is one of the top things to do in Sesimbra in summer.
Arrábida Natural Park and the marine park
Arrábida Natural Park was created in 1976 to protect the limestone ridge that runs between Setúbal and Cape Espichel. Its slopes are covered with a rare Mediterranean scrub forest of wild olive, strawberry tree and myrtle, an unusual sight on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. In 1998 the sea in front of the park became a marine park, where fishing is restricted and the rocky seabed has become a nursery for fish, octopus and cuttlefish.
Paddling here means moving quietly through this protected water without the noise of an engine. Look down and you can often see shoals of fish over the rocks; look up and you may spot gulls and shags on the ledges. This Arrábida kayaking route keeps close to the shore, so you see far more detail than from any boat, and the instructor explains how the park is managed.
The cliffs, caves and rock arches of the Arrábida coast
West of Sesimbra the coastline is a wall of pale limestone, folded and tilted by ancient earth movements and carved by the Atlantic into caves, arches and narrow channels. Layers of rock in shades of cream, grey and ochre are clearly visible, and in some places you can see fossils and old sea levels marked in the stone.
The first stretch of paddling lasts about 75 minutes, with stops at the most interesting caves and formations when the sea allows. Your instructor chooses how close to go in each spot according to the swell, so the route changes slightly from day to day. For many guests this is the best part of the Sesimbra caves kayak experience: the light inside the caves turns the water a bright turquoise, and the echo of the waves makes each opening feel alive.
Ribeiro do Cavalo beach
Ribeiro do Cavalo is a small cove framed by steep cliffs and white limestone boulders, with water so clear that the seabed is visible several metres down. By land it can only be reached by a steep footpath, so it stays quiet even in high season, and arriving by kayak is by far the easiest way to get there.
You spend about 30 minutes on the beach, with a snack, water refills and time to swim or simply sit on the sand. The water is cool all year, as on the whole Atlantic coast, but very calm in the shelter of the cove. Is Ribeiro do Cavalo worth visiting? Many travellers call it the most beautiful beach near Lisbon, and seeing it from the water before landing is a highlight of the day.
From Lisbon to Sesimbra: the scenic transfer
On the default morning option our partner van collects you in central Lisbon and drives south across the Tagus on the 25 de Abril Bridge, with views back to the city, the river and the Christ the King monument on the south bank. The road then crosses the Setúbal Peninsula through pine woods and farmland to reach Sesimbra in about 45 minutes.
This makes the tour an easy kayak day trip from Lisbon without renting a car or working out bus connections. You are back in the centre of the city in the early afternoon, with time left for sightseeing. If you are already staying on the Setúbal Peninsula, the harbour-only option lets you meet the group directly in Sesimbra instead.
