Full Description

Sintra, the romantic town in the hills

Sintra sits in forested hills about 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, and for centuries Portuguese kings and nobles built summer palaces here to escape the heat. In 1995 its whole cultural landscape of palaces, parks and villas was listed by UNESCO, the first place in Europe recognised for this kind of romantic setting.

Your day trip to Sintra from Lisbon starts with a guided walk in the old town, around the twin conical chimneys of the National Palace and its narrow streets. You then have a little free time to wander the lanes or try a travesseiro, the local almond pastry. Sintra is often cool and misty, even in summer.

Quinta da Regaleira and the Initiation Well

Quinta da Regaleira is an extraordinary estate built in the early 20th century for the wealthy collector António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, with the Italian architect Luigi Manini. Its neo-Manueline mansion, chapel and gardens are filled with symbols linked to alchemy, the Templars and the Freemasons.

The star is the Initiation Well, an inverted tower about 27 metres deep with a spiral staircase of nine landings, said to represent the circles of Dante's journey. At the bottom, tunnels lead to grottoes and a lake with stepping stones. Your guide leads the Quinta da Regaleira visit for about 75 minutes, revealing its hidden meanings.

Pena Palace, a fairy-tale on the hilltop

Pena Palace crowns the highest peak of the Sintra hills. King Ferdinand II began building it in 1842 on the ruins of a monastery, mixing Gothic, Manueline and Moorish styles and painting it in bright yellow and red. It is one of the finest examples of 19th-century Romanticism in Europe.

With the complete option, your Pena Palace tickets include the interior rooms, kept as the royal family left them in 1910, plus the terraces and the vast park with exotic trees and lakes. Plan around ninety minutes here. Is Pena Palace worth visiting? The views from its terraces across to the Atlantic answer that on a clear day.

Cabo da Roca, Guincho and Cascais

From Sintra the road winds down to the coast near Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where the poet Camões wrote that the land ends and the sea begins. We make a photo stop by the cliffs and Guincho Beach, a wild stretch of sand loved by surfers.

The last stop is Cascais, a former fishing village that became the summer retreat of the Portuguese royal family in the late 19th century. Enjoy about ninety minutes of free time along the bay, the marina and the pedestrian streets, and have lunch at your own expense before the drive back to Lisbon.
