Overview

This Tagus River sailboat tour shows Lisbon from the water, the way sailors have seen it for centuries. You join a small shared group of up to 10 guests on a sailboat that leaves from a marina on the Lisbon riverfront and sails for about 2 hours along the city. The default option is the sunset sail, a late-afternoon departure timed for the golden light over the river; morning and early-afternoon sails are also available in the booking panel. Your skipper gives live commentary in English as you pass under the 25 de Abril Bridge, look across to Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, and glide past Praça do Comércio and Alfama. A welcome soft drink and water are included. Hotel pickup is not included.

Full Description

The 25 de Abril Bridge and Cristo Rei

The 25 de Abril Bridge is the great red suspension bridge that links Lisbon with Almada on the south bank of the Tagus. Opened in 1966 and more than 2 kilometres long, it carries cars on its upper deck and trains below, and it took its present name from the date of the 1974 revolution that brought democracy to Portugal. Sailing beneath its towers, with the hum of traffic high above the mast, is one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

On the hill across the river stands the Cristo Rei sanctuary, a tall statue with open arms that looks over the city from Almada. From the sailboat you see both landmarks together, framed by the water, a view that is impossible from the streets. Your skipper explains the history of the bridge and how ships still use the river below it to reach the port of Lisbon.

Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries

West of the bridge lies Belém, the riverside district from which Portuguese ships set out on their ocean voyages in the 15th and 16th centuries. Belém Tower, a small fortress of white stone built in the early 16th century, once guarded the entrance to the harbour and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery.

Closer to the water stands the Monument to the Discoveries, a tall concrete prow shaped like a caravel and lined with carved figures from the age of exploration. Seen from the river, as sailors would have seen the shore when they returned from sea, both monuments make more sense than from the land. If you plan a Belém Tower visit on another day, this sail is a beautiful way to see it first from the Tagus.

Praça do Comércio and the Alfama hillside

Heading east, the sailboat follows Lisbon's historic waterfront. Praça do Comércio, the vast arcaded square painted in yellow, opens directly onto the river. It was the site of the royal palace until the great earthquake of 1755, after which the city centre was rebuilt on a grid of straight streets behind the triumphal arch of Rua Augusta.

Above the square climbs Alfama, the oldest quarter of Lisbon, a maze of white houses, tiled façades and church towers crowned by São Jorge Castle. From the water you can pick out the cathedral and the dome of the National Pantheon, and the whole hillside glows in the late afternoon light. This view of the city from the river is the reason many travellers call this the best Lisbon boat tour for first-time visitors.

Sailing the Tagus at sunset

The Tagus is the longest river of the Iberian Peninsula, and at Lisbon it widens into a broad estuary that the locals call the Sea of Straw because of the golden reflections on its surface at sunset. On a sunset sail the light turns the bridge, the hills and the water warm orange and pink, while the breeze fills the sails and the city noise fades behind you.

The best time for a Lisbon sunset cruise is from spring to early autumn, when evenings are long and mild, but winter sunsets are often clear and dramatic too. The departure time of the sunset option changes with the season, so check the time in the booking panel. Morning sails are calmer and cooler, and early-afternoon sails give the brightest views of the city.
