Full Description
Peniche, the fishing town by the Atlantic
Peniche sits on a rocky peninsula about an hour north of Lisbon and is one of the busiest fishing harbours in Portugal. Its old fortress, the long sea walls and the colourful boats in the harbour give the town a strong maritime character, and Cabo Carvoeiro, at the tip of the peninsula, offers sweeping views over the ocean towards the Berlengas.
Your trip starts at Peniche marina, where the ferries for the island line up along the harbour front. Arrive early to find parking and collect your boarding pass. If you are wondering how to get to Berlenga Island, this is the only way: by boat from Peniche, and the island is visible on clear days as a dark granite outline on the horizon.
The crossing to the Berlengas archipelago
The ferry crossing takes about 30 minutes and covers roughly 16 km of open Atlantic. The archipelago is made up of Berlenga Grande, where you land, and the smaller groups of the Estelas and the Farilhões, all formed by ancient granite that once belonged to the same landmass as the mainland.
The sea here can be lively, especially in the afternoon when the wind rises, so travellers prone to seasickness should take precautions before boarding. On calm days you may spot seabirds skimming the waves and, now and then, dolphins. The boat sails into the small harbour of Carreiro do Mosteiro, the landing point and the starting place for every walk on the island.
Berlenga Grande and the nature reserve
Berlenga Grande has been protected for decades and, since 2011, the whole archipelago has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The island has no cars and only a handful of buildings, and the number of daily visitors is limited to protect its fragile habitats, which is why a visitor fee must be paid online before each trip.
Marked paths lead across the plateau to viewpoints over sea caves, natural arches and steep cliffs. The island is an important nesting site for seabirds such as yellow-legged gulls and Cory's shearwaters, and it has plants found nowhere else in the world. Stay on the trails and keep a respectful distance from the birds, especially during the spring nesting season.
Fort of São João Baptista
The Fort of São João Baptista is the image everyone associates with Berlenga. Built in the 17th century on the ruins of an earlier monastery, it stands on a rocky islet just off the island and is reached by a narrow stone bridge with arches over the sea. In 1666 a small garrison held the fort against a much larger enemy fleet, an episode still remembered in the island's history.
The walk down to the fort follows a winding path with steps, about 20 to 30 minutes from the harbour, and the views of the fort framed by turquoise water are among the most photographed in Portugal. Wear good shoes, take water and allow enough time to return to the boat before departure.
Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro and Elephant Rock
Right next to the landing point lies Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro, the only beach on the island where swimming is easy and safe. The small sandy cove is sheltered by rocks, and its water is famous for being exceptionally clear, so you can see the seabed from the shore. It is the perfect place to cool off after walking up to the viewpoints.
Along the coast you will also see Elephant Rock, a granite formation whose shape recalls an elephant drinking from the sea, as well as caves and narrow channels carved by the waves. Is Berlenga Island worth visiting? For lovers of wild landscapes and clear water, it is one of the most rewarding short trips on the Portuguese coast.
Best time to visit Berlenga and practical tips
The ferries run in the island season, from spring to early autumn, and the best time to visit Berlenga is from June to September, when the sea is calmer and the water warmest for a swim. Morning departures usually have the calmest sea and the softest light for photos, while the afternoon ferry suits those who want a slow start in Peniche.
There is little shade on the island, so bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. A small café and a restaurant operate near the harbour in season. Remember that the island visitor fee is paid separately online when you book your boat, and that the island is not suitable for travellers with reduced mobility because of its steep paths and steps.
