Overview

Spend four hours on one of Portugal's wildest islands. This shared trip leaves Peniche harbour for the Berlengas archipelago, a protected nature reserve about 10 km offshore, crossing by catamaran in summer or by a smaller fast boat in winter in roughly half an hour. On Berlenga Grande a local guide leads a walk across the granite island, explaining its geology, seabird colonies, the old fishermen's settlement, the lighthouse and the 17th-century fort on its rocky islet. Then a glass-bottom boat takes you into the sea caves and tunnels carved by the Atlantic, before free time on the island's small sandy beach. It suits nature lovers, families and anyone looking for a day trip on the Silver Coast.

Full Description

Peniche: harbour town of the Silver Coast

Peniche sits on a rocky peninsula about 95 km north of Lisbon, roughly an hour and a quarter by car. It was once an island, joined to the mainland only when sand filled the channel over the centuries. Today it is one of Portugal's busiest fishing ports and a famous surf town, with the Supertubos and Baleal beaches nearby, and a long tradition of fine bobbin lace.

The boats to the Berlengas leave from the harbour in the town centre, close to the 16th-century fortress that guards the port. If you are wondering how to get to Berlenga, this is the only departure point: ferries and tour boats are the sole link to the island, and daily visitor numbers are limited to protect the reserve, so booking ahead matters in summer.

Berlengas archipelago and Berlenga Grande

The archipelago is made up of Berlenga Grande and the smaller Estelas and Farilhões reefs. It has been a nature reserve since 1981 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011. Berlenga Grande, the only island open to visitors, is a pink-granite plateau about 1.5 km long, ringed by cliffs, coves and natural arches, with no cars and only a handful of fishermen's houses.

The guided hike follows the island's paths up to the lighthouse, built in the 19th century on the highest point, and down to viewpoints over the fort. Your guide explains how monks, fishermen and soldiers lived here, and introduces the plants found nowhere else. A Berlengas day trip from Peniche is the best way to see the island; the walk takes around an hour at an easy pace.

Fort of São João Baptista

The most photographed sight on Berlenga is the Fort of São João Baptista, built in the 17th century on a rocky islet just off the main island and reached by a narrow stone walkway over the sea. Monks had settled here in the early 16th century, but pirate raids and the harsh winters drove them away, and stones from their monastery were reused to build the fortress.

The fort defended the coast against corsairs and saw a famous siege in 1666, when a small garrison resisted a much larger fleet for days. Today it is a striking sight from the cliff paths and from the boat, with turquoise water swirling around its walls. Your guide points out the best viewpoints for photos during the hike.

Sea caves by glass-bottom boat

The Atlantic has carved Berlenga's granite into caves, tunnels and arches, and the glass-bottom boat ride takes you right inside them. The highlight is Furado Grande, a long sea tunnel that opens into a small cove, along with the Blue Grotto, where light reflected from the sandy floor turns the water an intense blue. Through the glass floor you can watch fish swimming over the rocks.

The water around Berlenga is among the clearest in mainland Portugal, thanks to the strong currents and the absence of rivers nearby. The cave tour lasts about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the sea. On rough days the skipper may shorten the route for safety, which is part of the adventure on an exposed island.

Carreiro do Mosteiro beach and island wildlife

After the hike and cave tour you have free time on Carreiro do Mosteiro, a small sandy beach in a sheltered cove beside the landing pier. The water is cold, usually 15 to 19 °C even in summer, but wonderfully clear, so a quick swim or a paddle is popular on warm days.

Berlenga is above all a seabird island. Yellow-legged gulls nest everywhere in spring, and you may also see Cory's shearwaters and shags on the cliffs. Please keep to the marked paths and do not feed the birds. The best time to visit Berlenga is from May to September, when the sea is calmer and the catamaran runs; in winter crossings are shorter but depend more on the weather.
