Full Description
Costa da Caparica, Lisbon's surf beach
Costa da Caparica is a long stretch of golden sand on the Atlantic coast just south of the Tagus estuary, about 30 minutes by road from central Lisbon. Its open beaches face the ocean swell, and the sandy seabed creates soft, rolling waves that are perfect for learning. Behind the dunes rises the Fossil Cliff, a protected landscape of layered sandstone that tells the story of the coast over millions of years.
The town began as a fishing village, and you can still see colourful boats pulled up on the sand at the northern end. Today it is the favourite beach escape for Lisbon families and the main base for surf schools near the capital. If you are wondering how to get to Costa da Caparica without a car, the transport in this option is the easiest answer: our driver takes you there and back.
Crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge
The journey from Lisbon is part of the experience. After meeting at Sete Rios, the van heads south and crosses the 25 de Abril Bridge, the long red suspension bridge over the Tagus opened in 1966. From the bridge you see the river opening towards the ocean, the Belém waterfront on one side and the Cristo Rei statue on the hill of Almada on the other.
Once across, the road runs through Almada and down towards the coast, and in about half an hour you reach the beach. Travel time depends on traffic, especially on summer weekends when many Lisbon residents head to the sea. The return journey follows the same route, bringing you back to the meeting point about 4 hours after departure, with the rest of the day free to explore Lisbon.
Your two-hour surf lesson
On the beach, your certified instructor fits you with a wetsuit and a soft, stable surfboard, then starts with a warm-up and a lesson on the sand: how to paddle, how to read the waves, and how to pop up from lying to standing in one smooth move. Safety in the water, surf etiquette and the right position on the board are explained clearly in English.
Then it is time for the Atlantic. Beginners practise in the white water close to the shore, while more experienced surfers move out to the green, unbroken waves to work on turns and wave choice. The instructor stays with the group throughout, giving tips after each ride. By the end of the session most first-timers stand up on the board, and many catch several waves on their own.
Best time for surfing in Lisbon
Surfing around Lisbon is possible all year. From late spring to early autumn the water is at its warmest, the waves are smaller and the days are long, which makes it the best time for a beginner surf lesson in Portugal. In autumn and winter the Atlantic sends bigger swells, so instructors choose sheltered spots and adapt the lesson to the conditions.
The water off Costa da Caparica stays cool even in summer, which is why a full wetsuit is always included. Morning sessions often have lighter winds and smoother waves, while afternoon sessions are warmer on the beach. Whatever the season, surfing at Costa da Caparica is one of the most refreshing things to do in Lisbon, and a fun change from city sightseeing.
