Full Description

Tram 28, Lisbon's icon on rails

Tram 28 has become a symbol of Lisbon. Its wooden yellow carriages, the so-called Remodelados, date from the 1930s and were renovated in the 1990s; they are small and nimble enough for the tight curves and steep slopes of the old city, where modern trams could not run.

The line runs about seven kilometres between Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique, and a full ride takes around forty to fifty minutes, depending on traffic. The best time to ride Tram 28 is early in the morning, when there are fewer passengers and a better chance of a window seat. Boarding at Martim Moniz also helps.

Graça and Alfama: viewpoints and the cathedral

From Martim Moniz the tram climbs to Graça, one of Lisbon's highest neighbourhoods, near the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and the Graça viewpoint with wide views over the castle and the river. It then dips into Alfama, the oldest district, whose maze of alleys survived the 1755 earthquake.

Hop off at Largo das Portas do Sol or Miradouro de Santa Luzia for the classic postcard view over Alfama's red roofs, then walk up to São Jorge Castle. Just below, the tram passes Lisbon Cathedral, the Sé, a Romanesque fortress-church begun in the 12th century.

Baixa, Chiado and Estrela

After Alfama, the tram rolls through Baixa, the elegant downtown rebuilt after the earthquake, and up to Chiado, the literary quarter of historic cafés, theatres and bookshops, including one of the oldest bookshops in the world. It squeezes past the Portuguese Parliament on the way to Estrela.

The Basílica da Estrela, with its white dome and twin towers, faces a pleasant garden. The line ends in Campo de Ourique near Prazeres Cemetery, a quiet place with chapels and views. From here you can ride back or continue exploring with your 24-hour transport pass.

Your 24-hour pass: funiculars and the Santa Justa Lift

Your ticket includes a 24-hour pass for Lisbon's public transport network, so you can use the metro, buses and trams all day. It also covers the city's historic funiculars, the Glória, Bica and Lavra lines, which haul you up the steepest hills in style.

The pass includes the Santa Justa Lift, the neo-Gothic iron elevator from 1902 that links Baixa with Carmo Square in Chiado. How to get around Lisbon without climbing every hill? This pass is the answer, and it pays off quickly if you combine Tram 28 with a few other rides the same day.
