Full Description
A fado house above Lisbon's Roman theatre
The evening is held in a Pombaline building, the earthquake-resistant style that rebuilt Lisbon after the great earthquake of 1755. Inside, original stone arches rise to ceilings about five metres high, and the walls are covered with a vast collection of vinyl records that trace the history of fado. Beneath the building lie remains of the Roman theatre of Olisipo, built in the early first century and rediscovered in the late eighteenth century.
More than a show venue, the house works as a small academy of fado, inviting musicians and singers of different generations for informal nights where tradition is passed on. That is what makes this fado show in Lisbon feel so personal: the lights go down, the guitars tune up, and the room falls silent the moment the first voice begins.
Fado, the song of Lisbon
Fado was born in the poorer quarters of Lisbon such as Alfama and Mouraria in the early nineteenth century, sung in taverns, courtyards and harbour streets. Its themes are love, loss, the sea and saudade, the Portuguese word for longing. A fadista sings accompanied by the pear-shaped, twelve-string Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar, and in 2011 fado was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Tradition asks for complete silence while a song is being performed, and guests often notice how the whole room seems to hold its breath. On this night you hear several sets by different voices, from classic Lisbon fado to newer songs that blend in other musical influences. Is a fado night worth it in Lisbon? For many travellers it is the moment they remember most from the city.
The Portuguese tapas dinner
Between the sets, small plates arrive at the long tables, drawn from the cooking of the whole country. Expect a warming bean soup, peixinhos da horta, crisp battered green beans whose name means little fish of the garden, and pataniscas, golden fritters of salt cod and herbs that are a Lisbon favourite. Roasted chouriço, a smoked pork sausage often flamed at the table, completes the classic line-up, with bread, olives and other petiscos.
Soft drinks are served with the meal. The food comes in rounds, so the pace is relaxed and leaves room for the music. If you have dietary requirements, such as no pork or vegetarian, tell us when you book and we pass the request to the kitchen; substitutes depend on the menu of the night.
Around the venue: the Cathedral, the Roman theatre and Alfama
The fado house sits on the slope between Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle, one of the oldest corners of the city. The Sé, begun in the twelfth century, is a fortress-like Romanesque church, and next to the venue the Roman Theatre Museum displays the excavated seating and stage. A few minutes uphill, the Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints look over the rooftops of Alfama to the Tagus.
To get there, tram 28 stops by the Cathedral, and the Baixa and Rossio are about ten to fifteen minutes away on foot along cobbled, sloping streets. Arrive early to walk through Alfama at sunset before the show, and plan a taxi or ride-hailing car afterwards if you are staying farther away, as the night ends late.
