Full Description

Lagos, the historic heart of the western Algarve

Lagos is often the first stop on an Algarve day trip from Lisbon, and it deserves time. The town began as a Moorish settlement in the 8th century and became a key port in the Age of Discoveries; its old town walls, cobbled streets and lively marina are still charming today. It is also where Europe's first slave market opened in 1444, and a visit to the Slave Market Museum adds an honest and thoughtful chapter to the story of the Portuguese voyages.

There is time to wander the old streets, take a coffee near the marina and browse the shops before continuing along the coast. Lagos is a good place to answer the question of what to see in the Algarve for those who like history as much as beaches.

Ponta da Piedade and the beaches of Dona Ana and Camilo

Just south of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is the postcard image of the Algarve: golden limestone cliffs, natural arches, sea stacks and deep turquoise water. Walking the clifftop path gives spectacular views over the rock formations, and photographers will find it hard to stop taking pictures.

Nearby, Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are among the most beautiful beaches in the region, framed by high cliffs and reached by steps and boardwalks. Praia do Camilo in particular is known for its wooden staircase down to the sand. Both give a taste of why the Algarve is one of Europe's best beach destinations.

Carvoeiro, Algar Seco and Boneca Cave

Further east, the fishing village of Carvoeiro leads to Algar Seco, a coastal area of rock pools, tunnels and platforms carved by the sea, connected by walkways with viewpoints. Locals use the clear pools for a swim, and the area is popular for cliff-jumping, although that is not part of our stop.

Nearby is the Boneca Cave, sometimes called the Doll's Face Cave for its two window-like openings that look out to sea, a favourite photo stop. The walking here is moderate, so wear comfortable shoes with a good grip.

Benagil Cave and the boat ride

The last stop is the Benagil Sea Cave, one of the most photographed places in Portugal, a limestone chamber shaped over thousands of years by the Atlantic, with an opening in its roof that lets in a shaft of light. A day trip to Benagil Cave from Lisbon is the reason many people book this itinerary.

With good conditions, our tour includes a boat ride of about 30 minutes to the cave, subject to weather and availability, and the sea can be too rough some days. Access rules for the beach and cave are set by the authorities and can change, so the boat trip is the reliable way to see it. If the boat cannot run, you still enjoy the views from the clifftop.
