Full Description

Arrábida Natural Park and the Luiz Saldanha Marine Park

The Arrábida Natural Park is a ridge of white limestone rising straight from the sea south of Lisbon, covered in Mediterranean scrub and edged by pale beaches and turquoise water. Its coastline is protected within the Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, which is one reason the water is so clear and the marine life so rich.

A kayak tour in Arrábida is the best way to see it, as many of the coves and caves can only be reached from the water. Paddling beneath the cliffs, you feel the scale of the landscape, which many visitors compare to the Mediterranean coast further east.

Sesimbra and the kayak route

Your kayak tour starts at Sesimbra Harbour, a traditional fishing town with a castle above it. After a 20-minute safety briefing and a fitting for your equipment, you paddle along the coast with local guides who explain the nature, geology and history of the area, and share stories and legends.

The groups are deliberately small, with no more than 5 double kayaks per guide, so you get close support and can go at a relaxed pace. From Sesimbra, the paddle to Ribeiro do Cavalo usually takes around 1.5 hours, and the return is normally faster. In total the on-water time is about four hours.

Ribeiro do Cavalo Beach and the picnic

Ribeiro do Cavalo is a beautiful beach reached mainly by sea or by a steep path, and it is the midpoint of the tour. Here you stop to swim, relax and enjoy the scenery before paddling back.

In the default option a picnic is served on the beach: a chicken or vegan baguette, seasonal fruit, traditional Sesimbra Farinha Torrada and water. Other dietary needs can be met if you ask in advance. You also get beach towels to sit on and a water-resistant bag for small items, so you can enjoy the stop without worry.
