Full Description
Pena Palace and Park
Perched on one of the highest peaks of the Sintra hills, Pena Palace is the most famous image of Sintra and one of the finest examples of 19th-century Romanticism in Europe. It was built from the 1840s over the ruins of a monastery for a royal consort with a passion for art, mixing Gothic, Manueline and Moorish styles in bright yellow, red and grey. On clear days its terraces look across to Lisbon and the Atlantic.
Around it stretches the Pena Park, a forest garden of exotic trees, ferns, lakes and hidden paths. The principal rooms of the palace are currently under restoration, but the exterior ticket still gives access to the chapel, terraces, gardens and outdoor areas. Your guide advises on Pena Palace tickets and timed entry, and helps you plan the best route through the park.
The Moorish Castle
Clinging to a granite ridge opposite Pena, the Moorish Castle dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries, when Sintra was part of al-Andalus. It was taken by Christian forces in 1147 and later restored in the 19th century, when its battlements were rebuilt in romantic style. Walking along its stone walls, which follow the ridge up and down like a small Great Wall, is one of the highlights of a Sintra tour.
From the towers you enjoy panoramic views over Sintra old town, the National Palace, the forested hills and the ocean. Your guide brings to life the history of the Moors in Portugal and explains how the castle protected the region. The visit takes about an hour and involves many uneven steps, so good shoes are essential.
Quinta da Regaleira and the Initiation Well
Quinta da Regaleira is the most mysterious estate in Sintra. Built in the early 20th century for a wealthy collector by an Italian architect and set designer, it combines a neo-Manueline palace, a Gothic chapel and a lush garden full of grottos, lakes, towers and secret tunnels, all filled with esoteric and symbolic references.
Its most famous feature is the Initiation Well, a spiral staircase about 27 metres deep that descends through nine levels to a compass-like pattern at the bottom, from where tunnels lead out into the garden. Regaleira entry is by timed ticket, often at 10:00 or 14:30, and your guide helps you book it. If parking near the estate is not possible, the visit may be self-guided, with your guide meeting you afterwards.
Sintra old town and the National Palace
Sintra's historic centre has been a royal retreat for centuries, prized for its cool climate and green hills. Dominating the main square is the National Palace of Sintra, easily recognised by its two huge conical chimneys, the best-preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal, whose interiors are famous for their tiles. On this tour you see it from outside.
Here you have free time for lunch, which is not included; your guide can recommend a traditional Portuguese restaurant. Do not miss Sintra's famous pastries, the queijadas, small cheese tarts with cinnamon, and the travesseiros, flaky almond pastries, sold at historic pastry shops in the lanes around the square. Small craft shops sell ceramics, cork goods and tiles.
Optional: Cabo da Roca and Cascais
Because the tour is private, you can add about 90 minutes or replace Quinta da Regaleira with a drive to the coast. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where a lighthouse and a stone monument stand on cliffs some 140 metres above the Atlantic waves, a dramatic and windy viewpoint.
From there the road follows the coast to Cascais, a former fishing village turned elegant seaside town, with a marina, golden beaches and a pretty historic centre. A stroll along its promenade is a relaxing end to the day before the scenic coastal drive back to Lisbon along the Portuguese Riviera. Many visitors who ask how to get to Sintra from Lisbon end up choosing this loop for its variety.
