Full Description

Baixa, Lisbon Cathedral and Portas do Sol

The tour starts in the Baixa, the elegant grid of streets rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1755, near Praça do Comércio and the river. From here the tuk-tuk climbs to Lisbon Cathedral, the Sé, begun in the 12th century soon after the city was taken in 1147. With its fortress-like towers and rose window it is the oldest church in Lisbon.

Just above it, the Portas do Sol terrace opens onto one of the most famous views in the city: the terracotta rooftops of Alfama tumbling down to the Tagus, with the white dome of the National Pantheon and the towers of São Vicente de Fora on the skyline. It is a perfect first photo stop on any Lisbon tuk-tuk tour.

Alfama, Mouraria and Graça viewpoints

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest district, a maze of steep alleys, stairways and tiny squares that largely survived the 1755 earthquake. It is the birthplace of fado music, and laundry still hangs from the balconies. Next door, multicultural Mouraria and hilltop Graça complete the picture of old Lisbon.

The tuk-tuk reaches Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the highest viewpoint in the city, with a panorama from the castle to the river and the bridge. You also pass the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, decorated with blue-and-white azulejo tiles, and the National Pantheon of Santa Engrácia, whose construction lasted so long, from the 17th century until 1966, that Portuguese people still use its name for never-ending works.

Chiado, Carmo Convent and São Pedro de Alcântara

Chiado is Lisbon's most elegant quarter, with historic cafés, theatres, bookshops and shopping streets. Nearby, the Carmo Convent is one of the city's most moving sights: a Gothic church whose roof collapsed in the 1755 earthquake and was never rebuilt, leaving its arches open to the sky.

Higher up, in Bairro Alto, the São Roque Church hides one of the most lavish chapels in Europe behind a plain façade, and the garden viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara looks across the Baixa to the castle on the opposite hill. Your guide also shares the story of Lisbon's street art along the way. Chiado's squares and cafés are lively at any hour, making it a pleasant place to stretch your legs.

Lapa, Estrela Basilica and the 25 de Abril Bridge

On the longer options the tour continues west through Lapa, the quiet district of embassies and grand mansions, to the Estrela Basilica, a late 18th-century church whose white dome is a landmark of the city skyline. Across the road lies the shady Estrela Garden, one of the most pleasant green spaces in Lisbon.

Heading towards the river you get fine views of the 25 de Abril Bridge, the long red suspension bridge opened in 1966 that links Lisbon with the south bank of the Tagus. It is one of the most photographed sights of the city and marks the way to Belém. On a clear day the view also takes in the tall statue on the hill of the south bank, looking back across the water at the city.

Belém: Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries

Belém is where Portugal's great age of sea exploration is remembered. The Jerónimos Monastery, begun in the early 16th century, is a masterpiece of the ornate Manueline style and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Belém Tower, the small riverside fortress that once guarded the entrance to Lisbon's harbour.

Nearby, the Monument to the Discoveries, built in 1960, rises like a ship's prow above the Tagus. On the six-hour all-inclusive tour there is time to visit monuments inside (entrance fees are paid on site), and Belém is also the birthplace of the pastel de nata, first made by the monastery's monks. If you are planning a Belém tour, the tuk-tuk is one of the easiest ways to reach it from the centre.
