Overview
Discover Lisbon from behind the wheel of a small electric car that talks to you. On this self-drive sightseeing tour, a GPS system guides you turn by turn and plays audio commentary about the places you pass. The default option is a two-hour guided excursion: a guide on a scooter leads a small convoy of cars through Alfama, Graça, Chiado, Rossio and the Marquês de Pombal area, with two stops along the way. If you prefer to explore on your own, private self-guided options of one, two or three hours let you follow curated routes through the old town, modern Lisbon or Belém and stop wherever you like. Each car carries up to two people. A valid driving licence is required. Great fun for couples and friends.

Full Description
Alfama and Graça by electric car
The guided excursion heads first into Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, where narrow cobbled lanes wind beneath the castle hill. A compact electric car can reach streets that coaches cannot, so you see tiled facades, tiny squares and glimpses of the Tagus River up close. The GPS narration explains how Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake and why it is considered the birthplace of fado.
From there the route climbs into Graça, a traditional residential district on one of the city's seven hills, with its old convent, local cafés and famous viewpoints overlooking the rooftops. Driving these slopes yourself is part of the fun, and your guide on a scooter keeps the convoy together, chooses safe stopping places and points out the best photo spots along the way.
Rossio Square and the Baixa
Down in the valley lies the Baixa, the elegant grid of streets rebuilt after the great earthquake, and at its northern end Rossio Square, the lively heart of Lisbon since the Middle Ages. Its wave-patterned black-and-white cobblestones, baroque fountains and the neoclassical National Theatre make it one of the most recognisable squares in Portugal.
Driving through the Baixa gives you a clear sense of how the city was planned in the 18th century, with straight streets running down to the Praça do Comércio on the river. The audio commentary shares stories about the square's past as a place of markets, celebrations and public life, and points you to traditional pastry shops nearby if you want to come back later on foot.
Chiado and Príncipe Real
Chiado is Lisbon's historic district of theatres, bookshops and grand cafés, set on the hill between the Baixa and Bairro Alto. Its squares are decorated with statues of poets, and its streets have long been a meeting place for writers and artists. The guided route passes through Chiado, while the one-hour self-guided Old Lisbon route can continue to Príncipe Real.
Príncipe Real is one of the city's most charming neighbourhoods, known for its 19th-century mansions, independent design shops and a garden shaded by a huge cedar tree whose branches spread over a metal frame. The GPS route links these hilltop districts with the viewpoints between them, an easy drive in an electric car but a tiring climb on foot, especially on warm days.
Marquês de Pombal and modern Lisbon
The guided excursion also reaches the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, the large square at the top of Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's tree-lined grand boulevard inspired by the avenues of Paris. Above it stretches Eduardo VII Park with its formal hedges and wide views down to the river.
For travellers curious about the city beyond its old quarters, the one-hour Modern Lisbon self-guided route explores architecture from the second half of the 20th century, with broad avenues, residential blocks and cultural buildings that show a very different face of the capital. The narration explains how Lisbon grew northwards and how its neighbourhoods changed, a useful contrast to the medieval lanes of Alfama.
Belém on the longer self-guided routes
The two-hour and three-hour self-guided options take you west along the river to Belém, the district linked to Portugal's age of maritime discoveries. Here you can stop near the white Belém Tower standing in the Tagus, the Jerónimos Monastery with its lace-like Manueline stonework, and the Monument to the Discoveries on the waterfront, all UNESCO-listed or iconic landmarks.
Belém is about seven kilometres from the centre, which is why many visitors wonder how to get to Belém easily: this electric car route solves it, showing you the way and letting you stop wherever you like. Entry to the monuments is not included, but the car gives you the freedom to park and explore the gardens and riverside promenade before driving back to the base.
