Full Description
Peneda-Gerês National Park
Created in 1971, Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park and one of the wildest corners of the Iberian Peninsula. It covers granite mountains along the border with Spain in the far north of the country, cut by rivers, reservoirs and deep valleys, with oak and pine forests, heather-covered ridges and stone villages where traditional farming still shapes the landscape. Wild Garrano ponies, roe deer and golden eagles live here, and the Iberian wolf survives in the remoter ranges.
A Peneda-Gerês day trip from Porto is the easiest way to experience the park without a car. The drive takes about 1 hour 45 minutes each way, and the guide knows which trails and pools suit the day's weather. It is a very different Portugal from the tiled streets of Porto: quiet, green, mountainous and full of running water.
The hiking trail to the natural pools
The heart of this Gerês hiking tour is a 10 km round trip on foot: 5 km out to the pools and 5 km back to the vehicle. The trail has no steep climbs, but it is uneven, rocky in places and exposed to full sun, and in summer temperatures can reach 28 to 40 °C. Expect about 3 to 4 hours of walking in total, with the pace set by the group.
Along the way the guide stops to point out the views across granite peaks and valleys, the plants of the hillsides and the history of the area. Experienced walkers usually find the hike moderate and enjoyable; people who are not used to hiking, or who have heart, breathing or mobility problems, will find it hard. Only join if you are confident walking 10 km in the sun, and bring proper shoes, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
Swimming in Gerês natural pools
The reward at the end of the trail is a chain of clear natural pools hidden deep in the park, linked by small cascades and framed by smooth granite boulders. The water is cool and transparent, coming straight from the mountain streams, and the rocks warm up in the sun, making a natural place to rest, swim and eat your picnic lunch.
You have about 1.5 to 2 hours at the pools, depending on the group's walking pace: a faster group gains more time here, while a slower group may have slightly less to make sure everyone returns on schedule. Swimming is possible from June to September; outside that season the pools are a beautiful picnic stop. Bring swimwear, a small towel and water shoes if you have them, as the rocks can be slippery.
Waterfalls and Bom Jesus de Braga (relaxed option)
Not everyone wants a 10 km hike, so a second option visits Gerês National Park at a gentler pace. It combines scenic drives through the park with short walks to several waterfalls, a stop for a traditional lunch and, in summer, the chance to swim. It suits families, older travellers and anyone who wants the landscapes without the effort of a long trail.
This option also includes a stop at Bom Jesus de Braga, the hilltop sanctuary near Braga listed by UNESCO in 2019. Its baroque zigzag stairway climbs the wooded hillside with fountains and statues on every landing, and a historic water-powered funicular, the oldest of its kind still running, carries visitors to the top. Choose this option in the booking panel if you prefer waterfalls and culture to a long hike.
Practical tips: how to get to Gerês from Porto
Getting to Gerês from Porto by public transport is slow and limited, which is why a guided day trip is the most practical choice. This tour meets at 8:00 AM on Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira in central Porto, close to São Bento station, and returns there around 5:30 PM. The relaxed waterfalls option starts at 9:00 AM from the same address.
The best time to visit Gerês for swimming is from June to September, when the water is pleasant and the days are long. Spring brings green slopes and full waterfalls, while autumn colours the forests. Eat a good breakfast before departure, pack your own lunch and drinks, and bring at least two litres of water in summer. The tour needs a minimum of 4 participants to run.
