Full Description
Praça da Ribeira, the starting point
Praça da Ribeira is the lively square at the bottom of Porto's old town, opening straight onto the river. For centuries this was the city's trading quay, where boats unloaded fish, grain and goods from the Douro Valley. Today its tall, narrow houses with wrought-iron balconies and tiled facades frame cafés, street musicians and a modern cube-shaped fountain, and arcades lead into the steep medieval lanes behind.
The square is part of the Historic Centre of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, and boarding here means your Porto river cruise begins without any transfer. Before or after the trip, wander the alleys of the Ribeira district, climb towards the cathedral or look across the water at the quay of Vila Nova de Gaia, which you will see up close from the boat.
Upstream to the Freixo Bridge
Leaving the Ribeira, the boat sails east under the great double-deck iron bridge of 1886, whose top deck carries the metro high above the water. Beyond it, the old town clings to granite cliffs, with the Fontainhas quarter and its staircases above the river and, on the Gaia side, the round church of the Serra do Pilar monastery crowning the hill.
Further upstream you pass a slender concrete arch bridge from 2003 and then two railway bridges side by side: the graceful 19th-century iron bridge with its crescent arch, no longer in use, and the concrete bridge of 1991 that replaced it. The boat turns at the Freixo Bridge, the sixth crossing, where the river widens and the city gives way to greener banks. The crew explains how each bridge changed life in the two cities.
Downstream towards the mouth of the Douro
On the way back the boat glides past the Ribeira again and continues west along the old riverside districts of Miragaia and Massarelos, with their colourful houses, small churches and the grand 19th-century customs house on the waterfront. Ahead rises the Arrábida Bridge, a single concrete arch of 1963 that frames the view towards the Atlantic.
From here you can see the river opening towards Foz do Douro, the district at the mouth of the river, where the Douro meets the ocean beside a lighthouse and seaside promenades. Is the Porto six bridges cruise worth doing? This western stretch is the reason many visitors say yes: few other trips show the city from river level all the way from the old town towards the sea.
Vila Nova de Gaia from the water
Throughout the cruise the south bank belongs to Vila Nova de Gaia, a separate city that has always lived facing Porto. Its riverside quay is lined with old merchant warehouses, terraces and moored rabelo boats with tall square sails, while above them a cable car glides towards the upper level of the iron bridge. The contrast between the two banks is one of the pleasures of the trip.
The best time to visit for this cruise is late afternoon, when the low sun lights the facades of the Ribeira, or morning for calmer water and shorter queues. Because boats leave on a first-come basis, arrive a little before your preferred time; if one boat is full, the next leaves about half an hour later. Tickets for this cruise are easiest to plan in advance in summer.
