Full Description

Porto Cathedral and the view over the Douro

The walk begins at the top of the old town with Porto Cathedral, the Sé, a fortress-like Romanesque church begun in the 12th century on Pena Ventosa hill, where the first settlement of Portus Cale stood. Its twin towers, rose window and battlemented walls tell of a time when the bishop's church also served as a stronghold. Your guide stops here for about ten minutes to explain how the city, and the name of Portugal itself, grew from this hill.

From the cathedral terrace and the nearby upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge, the view drops over terracotta roofs to the Douro and across to Vila Nova de Gaia. It is the classic first look at Porto, and a perfect photo stop. Entry to the cathedral cloister is separate and not included.

São Bento Station and its azulejo tiles

A short walk downhill brings you to São Bento Station, opened in 1916 on the site of a former Benedictine convent. Its grand entrance hall is lined with blue-and-white azulejo panels showing medieval battles, royal processions and scenes of rural life along the Douro, with a colourful frieze running beneath the ceiling.

São Bento is free to enter and open from early morning to late at night, and it is still a working station for regional trains. Your guide explains the stories in the tiles and how azulejos became the signature art of Porto. If you come back later, early morning is the best time for photos without the crowds.

Aliados Avenue and the Clérigos Church

Aliados Avenue is the city's ceremonial boulevard, lined with granite and white stone buildings from the early 20th century and closed at its top by the City Hall with its tall clock tower. Here you pause for about 15 minutes of photos and a story or two about Porto's commercial golden age.

Next comes the Clérigos Church, a masterpiece of Portuguese baroque built in the 18th century, with an unusual oval nave and a richly carved granite façade. You step inside for a short visit. Its bell tower, for a long time the tallest building in Portugal, can be climbed with a separate ticket after the tour for a 360-degree view over the rooftops.

Rua de Santa Catarina and Bolhão Market

Rua de Santa Catarina is Porto's best-known shopping street, a pedestrian lane of shops, old cafés and Art Nouveau façades. At its upper end the Chapel of Souls is covered from top to bottom in blue-and-white tiles, one of the most photographed walls in the city. You stroll here for about 20 minutes with your guide.

The walk ends at Bolhão Market, a grand two-level market hall from 1914 that reopened after a careful restoration in 2022. Stalls sell fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, flowers, bread, cheese and local sweets. It is a great place to linger after the tour and taste Porto's everyday food culture, and its upper gallery gives a fine view over the trading floor.

Miragaia stairways and the hidden lanes

Between the landmarks your guide leads you through the parts of Porto most visitors miss: steep granite stairways, narrow lanes and tiny squares that drop towards the river and the old quarter of Miragaia. Here washing hangs from iron balconies, small chapels hide behind plain doors and the colourful façades look straight out of an old postcard.

Miragaia grew outside the medieval walls along the Douro and kept its fishing-village character. Its church of São Pedro is decorated with azulejos, and the riverside customs house nearby recalls Porto's long trading history. Comfortable shoes are essential on these cobbles, as the Porto old town tour involves plenty of up and down.
