Full Description
Batalha Square: where the lines begin
Both loops start at Stop 1 in Praça da Batalha, a lively square at the top of Porto's historic centre. Its name means "battle", recalling a legendary medieval fight for the city. Around the square stand the National Theatre of São João and, a few steps away, the Church of Santo Ildefonso, whose façade is covered in blue-and-white azulejo tiles.
Batalha is a convenient place to start your Porto hop on hop off bus day, close to Santa Catarina street and São Bento Station. The guided Porto–Gaia walking tour included in your ticket also leaves from here every day at 3 PM. Buses on the Red Line run about every 20 minutes in summer and every 25 minutes in winter, from 9:30 AM.
Crystal Palace Gardens and Casa da Música
Heading west, the Red Line stops at the Crystal Palace Gardens, romantic 19th-century terraces where peacocks roam among shady paths and viewpoints look down over the Douro. The original glass and iron palace was replaced in the 1950s by a domed pavilion, but the gardens remain one of the most peaceful spots in the city, with a small lake, rose beds and benches facing the river.
Further on, Casa da Música is Porto's bold modern concert hall, opened in 2005: an angular white building that looks like a cut stone dropped onto the square. Guided visits of the interior are available at set times. Hop off here if you enjoy architecture, then continue past the Bessa stadium district towards Serralves.
Serralves, Foz and the Atlantic coast
The Serralves stop serves the city's museum of contemporary art, set in a large park with gardens, woodland and a striking pink Art Deco villa from the 1930s. Plan at least two hours if you hop off; the park alone deserves a slow walk.
The bus then reaches the ocean at Castelo do Queijo, the 17th-century Fort of São Francisco Xavier, whose nickname "cheese castle" comes from the rounded rock it stands on. The route follows the seafront to Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic, with its promenade, rocky beaches and lighthouse. This is the best place to hop off on a sunny day and stroll along the water.
Along the Douro: Massarelos and Ribeira
From Foz the Red Line returns upriver along the Douro, past Cais do Ouro and Massarelos, where Porto's tram museum fills an old power station and the historic trams still run along the riverbank. The open top deck gives fine views of the river traffic and the bridges ahead.
The loop ends at Ribeira, the medieval waterfront of colourful houses and narrow lanes at the foot of the Dom Luís I Bridge. This is the place for photos of the river and of the traditional rabelo boats; the full Red Line circuit takes about two hours if you stay on board. The Six Bridges river cruise, included only with the top 48-hour ticket, departs from this riverside.
Blue Line: Vila Nova de Gaia and Serra do Pilar
The Blue Line takes about an hour and crosses to Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank. Jardim do Morro, a small hillside garden at the end of the Dom Luís I Bridge, is famous for its sunset views over Ribeira, and a cable car runs from here down to the riverside promenade, where old trading warehouses line the quay.
Next comes the Serra do Pilar Monastery, a UNESCO-listed 16th and 17th century complex with a round church and the most celebrated panorama of Porto. Buses run every 30 minutes from 9:45 AM. Combining both lines is the easiest way to see Porto in a day, especially if hills are not your thing.
