Full Description

Serra do Pilar Monastery viewpoint

Perched on a granite hill on the Vila Nova de Gaia bank, the Serra do Pilar Monastery was built in the 16th and 17th centuries for Augustinian monks. Its round church and circular cloister are unique in Portugal, and the whole site is listed by UNESCO together with Porto's historic centre. In the 19th century its position made it a key artillery post during the civil war siege of the city.

For riders, it is the best viewpoint in Porto: the terrace looks straight across the Douro to the Ribeira houses, the Cathedral and the Clérigos Tower stacked up the opposite hill. The e-bike makes the climb effortless, and your guide gives you time for photos and the story of how the city grew around the river.

Dom Luís I Bridge: riding the top deck

The Dom Luís I Bridge, named after the king who reigned when it opened in 1886, is Porto's emblem. Its iron arch spans 172 metres over the Douro and carries two decks: the lower one at river level and the upper one about 45 metres above the water, now shared by the metro and people on foot or by bike.

Crossing the top deck on a Porto bike tour is a highlight in itself, with a sweeping view upriver and downriver towards the Atlantic. You stop briefly on the bridge for photos, keeping to the side as the metro passes. Many visitors ask whether it is safe: the deck is wide, and your guide explains exactly where to ride.

Ribeira: the medieval riverfront

Ribeira is the oldest and most picturesque part of Porto, a tangle of medieval lanes running down to the quay. Tall, narrow houses painted in ochre, blue and green lean over the waterfront, laundry hangs from iron balconies, and traditional rabelo boats, once used to carry goods down the Douro, are moored along the river.

On the e-bike you ride along the cobbled quay and through Praça da Ribeira with its cube fountain. Your guide explains how this quarter was the commercial heart of the city for centuries and why the whole historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Ribeira is busiest from midday; the morning tour finds it quieter.

Cordoaria Garden, Clérigos Tower and Lello Bookshop

Up the hill, Cordoaria Garden takes its name from the rope-makers who worked here. Shaded by old plane trees, this 19th-century garden sits beside the former Court of Appeal prison and the university buildings. Next door rises the baroque Clérigos Tower, completed in the 18th century and for a long time the tallest building in Portugal; Clérigos Tower tickets let you climb its narrow stairway for a 360-degree view.

A few metres away is the Lello Bookshop, opened in 1906, with a neo-Gothic façade, carved wooden interior and a curving red staircase. The tour passes by without going inside. Is the Lello Bookshop worth visiting? Yes, if you book a timed ticket in advance and come early to avoid the queues.

Aliados, São Bento Station and Porto Cathedral

Aliados Avenue is Porto's grand boulevard, lined with early 20th-century granite buildings and crowned by the City Hall and its clock tower. Just below, São Bento Station opened in 1916 on the site of a former Benedictine convent. Its entrance hall is covered with blue-and-white azulejo panels showing battles, royal events and scenes of rural life; you get free time here to look closely.

The final stop is Porto Cathedral, the Sé, a fortress-like Romanesque church begun in the 12th century on the city's highest point. Its terrace offers fine views over the rooftops to the river. The station is open throughout the day and free to enter, while the Cathedral's cloister has a separate entrance fee.
