Full Description
Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal
Aveiro lies about 70 kilometres south of Porto on the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, a vast coastal lagoon of channels, marshes and salt pans. In the Middle Ages it was a thriving port for fish and salt, until a sandbar closed its mouth to the sea in the sixteenth century and the town slowly declined. In 1808 engineers opened a new channel to the Atlantic, trade returned, and the canals that cross the centre became the town's signature.
Your guided walk starts at Praça do Peixe, the fish market square, and continues through the Beira Mar quarter, with low fishermen's houses, tiled facades and quiet lanes along the water. As an Aveiro day trip from Porto, this half-day format gives you the essence of the town in a morning or an afternoon, with your guide explaining how fishing, salt and the lagoon shaped daily life for centuries.
The moliceiro boat ride on Aveiro's canals
The moliceiro is Aveiro's emblem: a long, flat-bottomed boat with a high, curling prow, built to harvest moliço, the seaweed and water plants that farmers once used to fertilise their fields. Its prow and stern are painted with bright panels showing saints, fishermen, local scenes and cheeky humorous sketches, so every boat is a small piece of folk art.
In the default option you board one of these boats for a 45-minute ride along the Central Canal and its side channels, passing Art Nouveau facades, old warehouses and low bridges, including one covered with colourful ribbons tied by visitors. The commentary on board tells the story of the canals and of the salt trade. If you prefer to explore on foot, the option without the boat replaces the ride with extra free time in Aveiro.
Salt, ovos moles and Art Nouveau in Aveiro
Salt has been produced in the Ria de Aveiro for more than a thousand years, in shallow pans where seawater evaporates in the sun, leaving white mounds that are raked by hand in summer. Your guide explains this heritage and the role it played in preserving the cod and sardines that fed the country. Aveiro is also famous for ovos moles, a sweet of egg yolk and sugar wrapped in thin wafers shaped like shells and fish, protected by a European designation of origin.
The centre is a showcase of Art Nouveau architecture from the early twentieth century, with curved balconies, floral ironwork and tiled facades along the canals; one of the finest buildings houses a small museum dedicated to the style. Use your free time to taste ovos moles at a traditional shop, admire the facades or sit by the water before the drive to the coast.
Costa Nova and its striped houses
About fifteen minutes from Aveiro, Costa Nova sits on the narrow strip of land between the lagoon and the Atlantic. Its palheiros, rows of wooden houses painted with bold vertical stripes of red, blue, green and yellow, began as fishermen's huts for storing nets and gear, and the colours helped each family recognise its own. Today they are holiday houses and one of the most photographed streets in Portugal.
You have about 30 minutes to walk along the lagoon promenade, photograph the houses and cross the dunes to the long sandy beach facing the ocean. On a clear day you can see the Barra lighthouse, the tallest in Portugal, just to the north. If you are wondering whether Costa Nova is worth visiting, the striped facades against the blue sky answer the question in seconds.
The Ria de Aveiro and the drive from Porto
How to get to Aveiro from Porto is simple on this tour: our air-conditioned van leaves from the meeting point near São Bento Station and follows the coastal motorway south for about an hour. Along the way your guide introduces the region, from the fishing towns of the coast to the lagoon, which stretches for about 45 kilometres and is an important refuge for birds, including flamingos in the cooler months.
The Ria is shallow and calm, dotted with islands, salt pans and small harbours, and its light changes with the tide and the season. The best time to visit Aveiro is from spring to early autumn, when the canals are lively and Costa Nova shines in the sun, but winter brings fewer visitors and soft light. After Costa Nova the van returns to central Porto, about four hours after departure.
