Overview
This half-day tour shows Porto three ways: on foot through the old town, from the Gaia cable car and from the water on a Douro River cruise. In the default shared option, your English-speaking guide meets you at the Portuguese Centre of Photography and leads you inside Livraria Lello for a guided visit of about 40 minutes, with the entry ticket included. You then walk past São Bento Station and Porto Cathedral, cross towards the Dom Luís I Bridge and ride the cable car down to the Gaia riverside, before a one-hour cruise beneath Porto's bridges. The tour lasts about four hours, ends at Cais de Gaia and suits couples and families; there is no pickup. Options without Lello or as a private tour are also available.

Full Description
The Portuguese Centre of Photography and Cordoaria
Your tour starts in front of the Portuguese Centre of Photography, housed in a massive granite building completed in 1796 as Porto's Court of Appeal and prison. It served as a jail until 1974 and, since 1997, has hosted photography exhibitions and a collection of historic cameras in its old cells and corridors, a striking contrast with its severe façade.
Around it spreads the Cordoaria garden, once the place where rope makers worked, now shaded by old plane trees and dotted with contemporary sculptures. The Clérigos Tower rises just behind, and the university buildings stand across the square. Your guide uses this first stop to introduce Porto's history, from its Roman beginnings on the Douro to the merchant city that grew rich on river trade.
Livraria Lello: inside Porto's most famous bookshop
Livraria Lello opened in this building in 1906 and is often called one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. Behind its white neo-Gothic façade, painted figures representing Art and Science frame the door, while inside a crimson staircase curls up in two branches beneath a stained-glass skylight bearing the motto Decus in Labore, honour in work. Carved ceilings, shelves and old book carts complete the scene.
Visiting on your own usually means buying Lello bookshop tickets in advance and queuing outside, so in the default option the entry ticket is included and you spend about 40 minutes inside with your guide, who explains the history of the shop and its architecture. Arrive at the morning departures if you want the calmest visit. If you have already been, the option without Lello skips this stop.
São Bento Station and Porto Cathedral
From Lello the walk heads downhill to São Bento Station, opened in 1916 on the site of a former convent. Its entrance hall is lined with vast blue-and-white azulejo panels showing historic battles, royal arrivals and scenes of rural life in the north of Portugal, and your guide points out the details as you pass through.
The route then climbs to Porto Cathedral, the fortress-like Romanesque church begun in the twelfth century on the oldest hill of the city. From the square in front, Terreiro da Sé, you look down over the rooftops of the medieval quarter to the river and the bridge you are about to cross. These are short stops on foot, ideal for photos and stories before the cable car.
The Dom Luís I Bridge and the Gaia cable car
You then reach the Dom Luís I Bridge, the double-deck iron arch opened in 1886, whose upper deck runs 45 metres above the Douro and carries the metro and pedestrians. Crossing it on foot is one of the great experiences of Porto, with the Ribeira houses on one side and the hillside of Vila Nova de Gaia on the other.
On the Gaia side, the cable car, opened in 2011, glides for about 560 metres from the garden of Jardim do Morro down to the riverfront. The ride takes only a few minutes in a glass cabin, but the views are spectacular: the bridge, the river, the terracotta roofs of Gaia and the old town climbing up the opposite bank. The cable car ticket is included in every option of this tour.
A Douro River cruise under Porto's bridges
The tour ends with a one-hour cruise from the Gaia quays, often called the six bridges cruise. The boat sails upstream and downstream past the Arrábida Bridge of 1963, the Dom Luís I Bridge, the modern Infante Bridge, the iron Maria Pia Bridge of 1877 and the São João and Freixo bridges, each telling a chapter of the city's engineering history.
From the water you see the Ribeira façades and Gaia's riverside at their best, with traditional rabelo boats, flat-bottomed cargo vessels that once carried goods down from the upper valley, moored along the banks. A Douro river cruise in Porto is one of the most relaxing ways to understand the city, and after landing you are free to stay at Cais de Gaia, with its promenade and cafés facing the old town.
