Overview
This shared cruise takes you along the Tagus River on a sailing yacht for two hours at sunset, the default option. You board at the Doca do Bom Sucesso marina in Belém, a few steps from Belém Tower, and follow the river east past the Monument to the Discoveries and under the 25 de Abril Bridge, with Cristo Rei watching from the south bank, as far as Commerce Square and the hillside of Alfama. A skipper handles the boat and shares stories of Lisbon's maritime past, while water or soft drinks are served on board. Groups are small, usually ten to twelve guests, and the boat has a toilet. It suits couples, families and friends. Daytime, one-hour morning and catamaran sunset options are also available. There is no hotel pickup.

Full Description
Belém Tower and the Doca do Bom Sucesso marina
The cruise begins at the Doca do Bom Sucesso, a small marina in Belém on Lisbon's western waterfront. Right next door stands Belém Tower, built between 1514 and 1519 to guard the entrance to the port. Its carved stone balconies, rope motifs and watchtowers are the finest example of the Manueline style, and together with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
Seeing the tower from the river is how sailors once saw it, rising from the water rather than from a crowded promenade. Arrive a little early to walk around the outside before boarding. Belém Tower tickets are needed only to climb inside, which you can do on another day; on this Belém boat tour you enjoy the classic view of its riverside façade as the yacht leaves the marina.
The Monument to the Discoveries and the Belém waterfront
Heading east, the yacht passes the Monument to the Discoveries, a fifty-two-metre stone prow raised in 1960 and carved with figures from Portugal's age of exploration. Behind it, the long white façade of the Jerónimos Monastery recalls the wealth that the spice trade brought to Lisbon in the sixteenth century, and its cloister is one of the masterpieces of Portuguese architecture.
Further along, the wave-shaped roof of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology and the red-brick Tejo power station mark the change from royal Belém to the industrial riverside of the twentieth century. The skipper points out each landmark and explains why this stretch of river mattered so much to Portugal's defence and to the caravels that set out from here.
The 25 de Abril Bridge and Cristo Rei
The highlight for many guests is gliding beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, the red suspension bridge that opened in 1966 and links Lisbon with Almada across about two kilometres of water. From the deck you hear the hum of traffic overhead and, at times, the trains that run on its lower level, and you see the huge towers and cables from an angle no viewpoint on land can offer.
On the south bank, the Sanctuary of Cristo Rei rises above the cliffs of Almada, its statue with open arms looking across to the city. Built in 1959, the monument stands more than one hundred metres above the river including its pedestal. At sunset the bridge and the statue turn gold and pink, and this is when most guests take their favourite photos of the Lisbon sunset cruise.
Commerce Square and the Alfama hillside from the river
Beyond the bridge the yacht passes the docks of Alcântara and Santos and the riverside promenade of Cais do Sodré before reaching Terreiro do Paço, also called Commerce Square. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, its yellow arcades and triumphal arch were designed to greet ships arriving from the sea, which is why the square looks its best from the water.
Above it rise the old quarters: the Cathedral towers, the terraced houses and church domes of Alfama, and São Jorge Castle crowning the hill. This is the eastern turning point of the cruise, with time to admire the city's oldest hillside before heading back towards Belém as the lights of the waterfront come on.
Sunset over the Tagus estuary
The Tagus is the longest river of the Iberian Peninsula, and at Lisbon it widens into a broad estuary that locals call the Mar da Palha, the sea of straw, for the golden colour of the water at dusk. Calm conditions inside the estuary make it ideal for a relaxed sail, while the open Atlantic lies just beyond Belém.
The best time to visit by boat is the two hours before sunset, when the light softens over the hills and the city glows. From late spring to early autumn the evenings are mild; outside summer, departures are earlier and a warm layer is welcome. Daytime and morning options give clearer light for photos, but the sunset sailing is the one most travellers choose.
