Full Description
Óbidos, the walled medieval village
Óbidos sits on a hilltop about an hour north of Lisbon, completely enclosed by medieval walls crowned by a castle. Entering through the Porta da Vila, whose chapel is lined with blue and white 18th-century azulejo tiles, you step into a maze of cobbled lanes and whitewashed houses trimmed in blue and yellow, with bougainvillea and flower pots on every corner.
On this Óbidos day trip from Lisbon you have about an hour for a guided walk and free time along Rua Direita, the main street lined with craft shops, small churches and viewpoints. If you have time, climb a short stretch of the walls for views over the terracotta roofs and the countryside. It is easily one of the most charming villages in Portugal.
Sítio da Nazaré, the clifftop viewpoint
Nazaré is divided into two parts: the lower town by the beach and Sítio, the old quarter perched on a cliff more than 100 metres above the sea. From the Sítio viewpoint you see the whole crescent of golden sand, the white houses of the town and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon, one of the most photographed views in Portugal.
Your guide leads a visit of about an hour here, including the square with its sanctuary church. To the north lies Praia do Norte and the fort and lighthouse of São Miguel Arcanjo, the place where, in winter, a deep underwater canyon creates some of the biggest waves ever surfed. Many people ask about the best time to see the Nazaré waves: the giant swells come between October and March.
Nazaré beach and fishing town
After the clifftop, you have about an hour and a half of free time in the lower town for lunch and a stroll along the beachfront. Nazaré has kept its strong fishing identity: colourful boats rest on the sand, fish is still dried on wooden racks in the sun, and some older women wear the traditional layered skirts the town is known for.
Seafood restaurants along the promenade serve grilled sardines, fish stews and fresh catch of the day, and there are cafés and pastry shops for a lighter lunch. Lunch is not included, so you are free to choose. In good weather the beach invites a walk along the shore before you rejoin the coach.
The Sanctuary of Fátima
The final stop is Fátima, Portugal's most important religious destination and one of the leading Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, visited by millions since the apparitions reported in 1917. The vast esplanade is framed by the white Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, with its tall bell tower, and the modern Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, one of the largest churches in the world.
At the heart of the site stands the small Chapel of the Apparitions, built on the very spot of the 1917 events, where pilgrims gather in quiet prayer. During your hour in Fátima you can visit the basilicas, light a candle, reflect or attend Mass if the Sanctuary schedule allows. The sanctuary is free to enter, and modest dress is appreciated.
