Overview
This three-hour late-afternoon trip leaves Funchal Marina on a traditional Madeiran wooden boat and follows the south coast west, past the fishing harbour of Câmara de Lobos, to the towering sea cliffs of Cabo Girão. Below the cliff the crew anchors in the protected marine area so you can swim and snorkel in clear Atlantic water, with masks and snorkels provided. On the way back the low sun lights up the cliffs and the amphitheatre of Funchal, and in autumn and winter the sunset falls right on the return leg. It is a shared trip with an English-speaking crew and music on board, ideal for couples, friends and families looking for a calm evening on the water.

Full Description
Funchal Marina and the seafront
The trip starts at Funchal Marina, right on the city's seafront promenade beside the cruise port and a short walk from the Old Town and the cathedral. Small fishing boats, yachts and tour boats share the basin, and the hills of Funchal rise straight behind it, dotted with white houses and gardens. The meeting point is store 2 on the marina walkway.
Funchal boat tours are among the most popular things to do in Funchal in the evening, and the traditional wooden boat used here gives the outing a classic island feel: wide decks, plenty of space to sit in the sun and an easy pace. As the boat leaves the harbour wall you get the best view of the city's amphitheatre shape, something you never quite see from the streets.
Câmara de Lobos and the south coast
Heading west, the boat passes the black-sand beach of Praia Formosa and then Câmara de Lobos, a fishing village tucked into a small cove beneath steep banana terraces. Its name recalls the monk seals, lobos-marinhos, that the first Portuguese sailors found resting on the rocks here in the 15th century. Brightly painted fishing boats are still pulled up on the pebbles.
From the sea the coastline shows its volcanic layers clearly: dark basalt flows, red ash beds and caves carved by the waves. The crew points out landmarks along the way, and on calm days you may spot flying fish skimming the surface. The stretch from Funchal to Cabo Girão takes about 45 minutes, a relaxed ride with constant views.
Cabo Girão: the great sea cliff
Cabo Girão rises about 580 metres straight out of the Atlantic, among the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Seen from a small boat at its foot, the scale is overwhelming. At the very bottom lie the fajãs, narrow strips of farmland formed by old rockfalls, where locals still grow vegetables and vines and reach their plots by cable car.
Most visitors see the cliff from the glass skywalk at the top, but a Cabo Girão boat trip shows the other side of the story: the sheer wall, the seabirds nesting on its ledges and the waterfalls that run down after rain. Your crew slows the boat beneath the cliff so you can take photos before moving to the snorkelling spot.
Snorkelling in the Cabo Girão protected area
The waters under the cliff form a protected marine area, created to safeguard the fish and seabed of this stretch of coast. The water is very clear, and with the masks and snorkels provided you can see parrotfish, ornate wrasse, damselfish, sea urchins and starfish among the rocks. The crew chooses the sheltered spot according to the sea on the day.
Snorkelling in Madeira is different from tropical reefs: the water is fresh, around 18 °C in winter and up to 24 °C in late summer, and very clean. Bring your own swimwear and towel. Non-swimmers can stay on deck and enjoy the views, while confident swimmers usually spend 20 to 30 minutes in the water.
The return to Funchal at sunset
On the way back the light changes everything. The low sun turns the cliffs gold and then rose, and Funchal's lights begin to flicker on across the hills. From October to March the sunset falls during the return leg; in spring and summer, when the sun sets later, you enjoy warm golden-hour light over the water instead.
The best time to book a Madeira sunset boat trip is on a clear day with light winds, typically from late spring to autumn when the sea is calmest. The trip ends back at Funchal Marina around 7:30 PM, perfectly placed for an evening stroll along the seafront promenade or into the Old Town.
