Full Description
Funchal city route
Funchal is Madeira's capital, a city of terraced hills, gardens and a busy harbour. The hop-on hop-off bus covers the main areas, so you can get off in the old town to walk the narrow streets, see the cathedral and the market, or stay on board and enjoy the commentary. A city bus tour in Funchal is the easiest way to get your bearings on the first day.
With a longer pass you can hop off and stay as long as you like, then take the next bus. Ask the crew or check the map in your voucher for the stops nearest the sights that interest you, since stops and timetables can change with the season.
Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos is a colourful fishing village a short distance west of Funchal, with a sheltered bay full of painted wooden boats. Winston Churchill is said to have painted the view during a visit, and the village keeps a relaxed, traditional character with a harbour, cafés and narrow lanes.
The route to Câmara de Lobos is included in every pass on this page, including the 2-in-1 options. It is a good place to spend an hour or two on foot, and many visitors combine it with the coast road for photos of the bay from above.
Cabo Girão
Cabo Girão is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, at about 580 metres, with a glass-floored skywalk at the edge. The Cabo Girão route is included in the 3-in-1 passes, but not in the 2-in-1 passes. The entry fee for the Cabo Girão viewpoint is not included, so decide on the day whether to go in.
If you are wondering whether Cabo Girão is worth visiting, the answer is yes on a clear day: the terraced fields below and the ocean beyond make it one of the best-known views on Madeira, and the bus saves you from driving the winding road.
Which pass to choose
The default option is the 3-in-1 pass valid for five days, the longest and most flexible. Other options include a 3-in-1 pass for 48 hours, a 2-in-1 pass for 48 hours and a 2-in-1 pass for 24 hours, and the booking panel shows the price for each, adult and child.
Choose the 3-in-1 pass if you want to see Cabo Girão, and a longer pass if you plan to stay in Funchal for a few days and enjoy the sights slowly. Entry fees for museums and monuments are not included, and the audio guide is in several languages including English.
