Overview

Explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of the natural wonders of Portugal, on a three-hour small-group boat tour with two island stops. Your local captain-guide steers a shaded boat through the calm lagoon channels, sharing stories about the islands, the tides and the birds and shellfish that live here. You spend about an hour on Culatra Island, a traditional fishing village of sandy lanes and colourful boats, then 45 minutes to an hour on Armona Island, or on Deserta Beach in summer, for a walk on the dunes or a swim. Because the boat stays inside the lagoon there is no seasickness. The default option is a shared group tour; a private boat for your group is also available. There is no hotel pickup.

Full Description

Ria Formosa Natural Park

Ria Formosa is a protected coastal lagoon in the eastern Algarve, stretching for about 60 km between Ancão and Manta Rota and sheltered from the Atlantic by a line of barrier islands. Declared a natural park in 1987, it is a maze of channels, salt marshes and sandbanks that fills and empties with every tide, and one of the most important wetlands in Europe for migrating birds.

On a Ria Formosa boat tour you glide past clam and oyster beds worked by local shellfish farmers, and often spot egrets, herons, spoonbills and, in the cooler months, flamingos. The map and identification guide on board help you recognise birds, species and molluscs, and the captain explains how the lagoon shapes local life.

Culatra Island and its fishing village

Culatra is the most authentic of the Ria Formosa islands. Its main village is a traditional fishing community with no cars, where sandy lanes run between small whitewashed houses and colourful boats rest on the lagoon shore. You have about an hour to wander, visit the small local church and learn from your captain about fishing and shellfish traditions that have shaped island life for generations.

The village is also known for its sustainable energy project, which aims to make the island a model clean-energy community. If you are hungry, simple local restaurants serve fresh clams, shrimp, sardines and grilled fish, many with views of the water. Many travellers asking how to get to Culatra Island find that a guided boat tour is the easiest way to see it.

Armona Island and Deserta Beach

Outside summer, the second stop is Armona Island, opposite Olhão, with a small community of simple holiday cottages, a long walkway through the dunes and fine sandy beaches facing both the lagoon and the ocean. Its natural trails and crystal-clear water make it a peaceful place to walk, swim or simply relax for 45 minutes to an hour.

In summer the tour stops instead at Deserta Beach, a secluded stretch of golden sand and calm, transparent water on Ilha Deserta, perfect for swimming. The stop order may change with the tides and weather, but you always visit two islands, with free time at each to explore at your own pace.

Shared or private boat and the best time to go

The default option is a shared small-group tour on a shaded boat, a relaxed way to meet other travellers while the captain shares local knowledge. If you prefer, you can book the whole boat privately for your family or friends, following the same island route at your own rhythm.

The lagoon can be enjoyed all year. Late spring to early autumn is best for swimming, while autumn and winter bring more birdlife and quieter islands. Morning departures offer softer light for photos, and afternoon tours often end in beautiful golden light over the water, so choose the time that suits your day in the Algarve. Whichever you choose, life jackets, the species guide and the captain's commentary are part of the experience.
