Full Description

Lagos, the historic harbour town

Lagos sits at the mouth of the Bensafrim river on the western Algarve coast and has been a port since Phoenician and Roman times. In the fifteenth century it was one of the main bases of Portuguese ocean exploration: caravels left from here to explore the coast of Africa, and the town still has its sixteenth-century walls, the Governors' Castle and a small fort guarding the harbour.

On this Lagos day trip from Albufeira you have free time in the centre, among cobbled streets paved in the traditional black-and-white Portuguese style, shops selling local crafts and ceramics, and squares lined with cafés. Look for the Church of Santo António, famous for its gilded carved wood interior, next to the municipal museum, and the old slave market building, today a museum on a painful chapter of history.

Cape St Vincent, the end of the world

Cape St Vincent, Cabo de São Vicente in Portuguese, is the south-western point of mainland Europe, where the coast turns sharply from the Atlantic west coast to the southern Algarve. The Romans called it the sacred promontory, and for centuries sailors believed it was the edge of the known world, beyond which the ocean became endless.

The cliffs here drop about 75 metres straight into the ocean, and on clear days the view stretches along both coasts. It is one of the best places in Portugal to watch the power of the Atlantic, and many visitors say it is the highlight of a western Algarve tour. Bring a jacket: the wind at the cape can be strong even on sunny days.

The lighthouse of Cape St Vincent

Inside walls of an old fortified convent stands the lighthouse of Cape St Vincent, a red-capped tower that has guided ships around the cape since the nineteenth century. Its light is among the most powerful in Europe and can be seen by ships far out at sea, a vital beacon on one of the busiest shipping routes between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

The cape was a key military position during the Age of Discoveries, controlling the sea routes along the coast, and several fortresses were built along these cliffs. Around the lighthouse there are viewpoints, small stalls and a courtyard where you can learn about the history of navigation, and the walk along the fortified walls offers the classic photo of the tower above the ocean.

Sagres and the western Algarve coast

Sagres is the small town closest to the cape, set on a windswept plateau between two bays, surrounded by beaches popular with surfers and by the protected coastline of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. On the drive the guide points out the fortress of Sagres and the wild landscape of low heath and cliffs that makes this corner of Portugal so different from the busy central Algarve.

The route from Albufeira to Lagos and Sagres follows the main coastal road west, about an hour each way, with views of the countryside and the Monchique hills inland. The best time for this tour is spring or autumn, when the light is clear and temperatures pleasant, but it runs all year, rain or shine.
