Full Description

Armação de Pêra and its fishermen's beach

Armação de Pêra is a fishing town turned seaside resort in the municipality of Silves, set on one of the longest sandy beaches in the Algarve. At its eastern end, the Praia dos Pescadores still has colourful wooden fishing boats pulled up on the sand, and this is where your tour begins. Boarding from the beach keeps things simple: no marina queues, just a short walk across the sand to the boat.

The town is a convenient base between Albufeira and Portimão, with a long seafront promenade, cafés and the small chapel of Santo António on the old fortress walls. Arrive about twenty minutes early, especially in summer, because parking near the beach is limited; many visitors simply walk from their hotel or take a taxi. Morning departures usually enjoy the calmest water.

Nossa Senhora da Rocha, Praia Nova and the western beaches

Leaving Armação de Pêra, the boat heads west towards the Nossa Senhora da Rocha headland, crowned by a small whitewashed chapel that has watched over local fishermen for centuries. Below it, tunnels and grottos pierce the rock, linking little beaches such as Praia Nova, Praia do Pontal and Praia da Morena, all framed by honey-coloured cliffs.

Further on you pass Praia dos Beijinhos, the Cova Redonda cave and Praia das Fontainhas, tiny coves that most travellers never see because they have no road access. Your guide explains how wind, rain and waves sculpted the soft limestone into arches, pillars and caves over thousands of years. This first part of the route is a highlight in its own right and a favourite for photographs.

The Albandeira Arch and Algar dos Capitães

Praia da Albandeira is a small, sheltered beach famous for the natural rock arch that stands just beside it, one of the most photographed rock formations in the central Algarve. From the boat you see the arch at sea level, with turquoise water flowing beneath it and the golden cliffs rising behind.

Nearby, the Algar dos Capitães is one of the sea caves the boat approaches when conditions allow, and the stretch past Praia da Malhada do Baraço reveals more hidden caves and sea stacks. If you are wondering whether a boat trip is worth it compared with visiting by car, this section answers the question: these views simply do not exist from the land.

Praia da Marinha and its heart-shaped rock

Praia da Marinha, in the municipality of Lagoa, is often listed among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Its sea stacks, double arch and clear emerald water make it the signature image of the Algarve. From the land you reach it by a long staircase from the clifftop; from the boat you see the whole bay-like cove at once, including the rock formation shaped like a heart.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail runs along the clifftops above Marinha, and you may spot walkers on the path as you pass below. Next comes Praia do Cão Raivoso, a wild little beach backed by sheer cliffs, before the boat rounds the final headland towards Benagil.

Benagil Cave, the highlight of the tour

Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is the most famous sea cave in Portugal: a vast dome of golden rock with a round opening in the roof, the 'eye', through which sunlight falls onto a small inner beach. The cave lies just east of the fishing village of Benagil and can only be entered from the sea. A Benagil Cave boat tour is the easiest way to see it.

When the sea and the maritime authorities allow, your boat enters the cave so you can look up at the skylight and the reflections on the water; landing on the inner beach is not part of the tour. The best time to visit Benagil Cave for light beams is around the middle of the day, while early departures are often calmer. The boat then returns to Armação de Pêra, giving you a last look at the coast.
