Overview
Discover the wild south-western tip of Portugal on a four-hour afternoon jeep tour that ends with one of the finest sunsets in Europe. A local guide picks you up at your hotel in the western Algarve and drives you in a 4x4 through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, sharing stories about the history of Sagres and the plants and wildlife of this untouched coast. You stop in the village of Sagres, at Cape St. Vincent, on a secluded beach reached only by dirt track, and finally on clifftops about 140 metres above the Atlantic, roughly twice the height of the cape, to watch the sun go down with a pastel de nata. It is a shared small-group tour with hotel pickup and drop-off.

Full Description
The village of Sagres
Sagres is a small, windswept town at the far south-western corner of the Algarve, surrounded on three sides by the ocean. Its headland, the Ponta de Sagres, is crowned by a historic fortress and has long been linked with Portugal's age of sea exploration, when navigators studied the winds and currents of this coast before sailing into the Atlantic.
Today Sagres is known for surf beaches, fresh fish and a relaxed atmosphere very different from the busy resorts further east. On this Sagres jeep tour your guide introduces the town's history and points out its landmarks as you pass through, before heading out into the natural park. If you are staying in the western Algarve, this is one of the best ways to see Sagres in a single afternoon.
Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente)
Cape St. Vincent is the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe, a rugged promontory where cliffs plunge straight into the Atlantic. Ancient travellers believed it was the edge of the known world, and today its lighthouse, one of the most powerful in Europe, guides ships along one of the busiest sea routes on the continent.
The cape is famous for its sunsets, and in summer the viewpoint can be crowded. That is why this tour visits Cape St. Vincent earlier in the afternoon, when you can enjoy the views calmly, and then takes you to a quieter clifftop for the sunset itself. Wrap up: even on warm days the wind at the cape can be strong and cool.
The Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park
This protected area stretches along more than 100 kilometres of Portugal's south-western coast and is one of the best-preserved coastlines in southern Europe. Away from the asphalt, dirt tracks lead through low scrub of rockrose, heather and wild herbs, many of them found nowhere else, and along cliffs where white storks are known to nest on sea stacks.
Travelling by 4x4 lets you reach corners of the park that cars and coaches cannot, with stops for photos and short walks. Your guide explains the plants, birds and geology along the way. Autumn is a special time to visit, when migrating birds of prey pass over the Sagres peninsula; spring brings wildflowers across the plateau.
A secluded beach by dirt track
One of the stops is an off-road secret beach spot that most visitors to the Algarve never find, reached only along an unpaved track through the natural park. Here the Atlantic rolls in against dark cliffs and golden sand, often with no one else in sight.
There is time to walk down to the viewpoint, take photos and feel the wild side of this coast that has kept its natural character. Comfortable shoes are a must, as the ground can be uneven and sandy. It is a chance to understand why so many travellers say the western Algarve is the most beautiful part of the region. Your guide also explains how this coastline was shaped and which seabirds you may spot along the cliffs.
Sunset from 140-metre cliffs
The tour ends on a clifftop about 140 metres above the ocean, about twice the height of Cape St. Vincent, where you watch the sun sink into the Atlantic with layered headlands glowing orange and purple along the coast. With fewer people than at the cape, it is one of the most peaceful places to see the sunset in the Algarve.
As the light fades you enjoy a pastel de nata, Portugal's famous custard tart, before your guide drives you back to your hotel. Sunset time changes by about a minute every day, so the pickup time is adjusted through the year; we send you the exact time after booking. Bring a jacket, as evenings on the cliffs are cool.
