Armação de Pêra sits between Albufeira and Portimão and is known for one of the widest, longest sandy beaches in the Algarve. The gently shelving beach and generally calm summer sea make it one of the best spots on the coast for water sports, and the jet ski base is right on the sand, about one kilometre west of the fishermen's beach.

Before or after your ride you can stay on the beach, stroll the seafront promenade or watch the fishing boats at the eastern end of town. A secure area is available to leave your belongings during the activity, so you only need your swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. The jet ski circuit and how the ride works

Every ride starts with a detailed safety briefing and basic operating training from the instructors, so complete beginners feel confident. You then head out to a designated circuit marked off the beach, take a few laps to get used to the handling and gradually build up speed across the waves.

Each jet ski can carry one or two people, so couples and friends can share the ride and swap at the controls if both are of driving age. A monitor on a safety boat follows the group at all times. The 15-minute ride is a quick burst of adrenaline, the 20-minute ride gives you time to settle in, and the 30-minute ride lets you enjoy both the speed and the scenery.

The view of the central Algarve coast

From the water you look back at the sweeping beach of Armação de Pêra and the low golden cliffs that run west towards the Nossa Senhora da Rocha headland and its small white chapel. To the east, the coast stretches towards Galé and Albufeira, with sandstone cliffs glowing ochre in the sun.

The sea here is deep blue offshore and turns turquoise over the sand near the beach. On clear days the light is spectacular, making the ride as memorable for its views as for its speed. The jet ski season follows the Algarve beach season, from spring to autumn, with the calmest water usually in the morning and late afternoon. Summer brings the warmest water and the busiest beach, so booking ahead is a good idea in July and August.

Activities depend on weather and sea conditions; in unsuitable weather the ride is rescheduled or refunded. Follow the instructors' directions at all times, keep within the marked circuit and do not use your phone while riding. The activity is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems, and passengers must be at least five years old. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory for every rider, and the instructors adjust it for you before you set off.
