Full Description
Praia da Albandeira
Praia da Albandeira is a small, quiet cove in the municipality of Lagoa, near the village of Porches, framed by golden cliffs and a striking natural arch that rises from the water on its eastern side. It is less crowded than its famous neighbours, which makes it an ideal starting point for a Benagil kayak tour away from the busiest launch beaches.
You meet the guides in the beach car park, receive your equipment and a short safety briefing with kayaking instruction, then launch directly from the sand. The tour returns here at the end, so you can stay for a swim or relax on the beach afterwards. The cove is reached by car along a short road from the main coastal route.
Caves, arches and hidden beaches
Between Albandeira and Benagil the coast is a maze of sea caves, tunnels, natural bridges and tiny beaches carved by the Atlantic into the soft limestone. Many of them are invisible from the cliff tops and can only be reached by kayak, which is what makes this route so special compared with boat trips that stay further out.
Your guide chooses the stops according to the sea conditions on the day, entering caves when it is safe and landing on hidden beaches only accessible from the sea when it is not. Along the way you learn how the cliffs were formed, about the seabirds nesting in the rocks and about the fishing traditions of this coast, with short breaks for water, a snack and photos.
Praia da Marinha
Praia da Marinha is regularly listed among the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with honey-coloured cliffs, a famous double rock arch and sea stacks rising from crystal-clear water. From land it is reached by a steep path from the cliff-top car park, but by kayak you glide right under the arches and see the rock formations from water level.
The tour includes a break of about 30 minutes in the Marinha area, with time for photos, a rest and a guided explanation of the landscape. The clear water here often lets you see the rocky seabed and small fish beneath your kayak. It is the perfect half-way point before the paddle to Benagil.
Benagil Sea Cave by kayak
The Benagil Sea Cave is the Algarve's most iconic natural landmark: a vast cavern with a dome-shaped ceiling and a round skylight that lets sunlight fall onto the sand inside. Kayaking into the cave is one of the most memorable ways to see it, as you float beneath the dome and look up at the sky through the opening.
Local rules no longer allow anyone to step onto the sand inside Benagil Cave, so you stay in your kayak, which the guide uses as the perfect moment for photos. The area is popular and you may see other groups; for a quieter experience, the early morning and afternoon departures are recommended. Many visitors ask whether a Benagil kayak tour is worth it, and the combination with Marinha and Albandeira on this route is the answer.
