Full Description
Ribeira Grande, the starting point
Ribeira Grande is a historic town on the north coast of São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, known for its old centre of black basalt and white walls, its river gorge and some of the island's best surf beaches. The tour starts at a green house on Largo de São José, with parking just a few metres away.
Here you meet your guide and receive a 20-minute safety briefing, plus your helmet, gloves and a raincoat for the island's changeable weather. Bring your driving licence and ID, as only licensed drivers can take the wheel. From Ribeira Grande the group heads west towards the mountains around Sete Cidades.
Muro das Nove Janelas
Hidden in a forest of cedars, ferns and moss on the slopes near Sete Cidades, the Muro das Nove Janelas ('Wall of the Nine Windows') is a section of the historic aqueduct that once carried water from these mountains towards Ponta Delgada. Its tall stone wall is pierced by nine arched openings, and it looks almost unreal in the soft, misty light of the woods.
The buggy trail passes right by it on dirt tracks that most visitors never drive, giving you one of the most atmospheric photo stops of the day. Expect mud after rain: the trail is part of the adventure, and the raincoat provided comes in handy.
Pico da Cruz and Miradouro das Cumeeiras
Pico da Cruz is the highest point on the rim of the Sete Cidades volcano, and on a clear day it offers a sweeping view over the crater, the lakes and the ocean on both sides of the island. A little further on, the Miradouro das Cumeeiras looks down over the lakes and the village from the crater ridge.
Your guide stops at both for photos and explains how the caldera, about five kilometres across, was formed by huge eruptions. Clouds can roll over the rim quickly, which is part of the charm of the Azores; the guide adapts the stops to the weather on the day to find the best views.
Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the twin lakes
The highlight of the tour is the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the iconic twin lakes on the crater floor: one deep blue, the other green, joined beneath a small bridge. A local legend tells of a princess and a shepherd whose tears formed the two lakes, one from blue eyes and one from green.
The group takes a break by the lakes before driving back to Ribeira Grande. If you are wondering whether Sete Cidades is worth visiting, the answer is yes, and seeing it by buggy adds trails and viewpoints that standard tours miss. The best time to visit Sete Cidades is on a clear morning or late afternoon; both departures are available.
