Full Description
Cabo Girão and its glass skywalk
Cabo Girão is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, rising about 580 metres straight out of the Atlantic just west of Câmara de Lobos. At the top, a glass-floored skywalk juts out over the edge, so you can look down at the waves and at the tiny terraced fields, called fajãs, that farmers still tend at the foot of the cliff.
From the platform the view stretches east over Câmara de Lobos and the bay of Funchal and west along the southern coast. The Cabo Girão skywalk entrance is a small separate fee, paid on the spot, and the visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Morning is the best time to visit Cabo Girão, before clouds gather on the cliffs, which is why it is the first stop of the day.
Waterfalls of the north-west coast
Crossing to the north side of the island, the landscape changes completely. Here the mountains are greener and steeper, cut by deep valleys, and in many places streams leap from the cliffs straight into the Atlantic. Along the coast between São Vicente, Seixal and Porto Moniz, waterfalls such as the Véu da Noiva, the Bridal Veil, pour down the rock faces beside the road.
This stretch of coast is famous for its old cliff road, carved into the rock in the early 20th century and now partly replaced by tunnels. Your guide points out the best viewpoints and tells how villagers once farmed the steep terraces on these slopes. The waterfalls are at their fullest in winter and spring after the rains, but the scenery is dramatic in every season.
Porto Moniz natural pools
At the north-western tip of Madeira lies Porto Moniz, a small town famous for its natural swimming pools formed in black volcanic lava. The Atlantic waves crash over the rocks and refill the pools with clear sea water, creating safe places to swim surrounded by the open ocean. One pool area is a managed complex with a small entrance fee, and a second pool area nearby is open access.
Your stop here includes time for lunch at your own expense in one of the seafront restaurants, and a swim if the weather allows, so bring swimwear and a towel. The best time to swim in the Porto Moniz natural pools is from June to October, when the water is warmest. Even in cooler months, watching the waves break over the lava rocks is a highlight.
Fanal Forest and its ancient laurel trees
Fanal Forest sits high on the plateau above the north-west coast, at about 1,100 metres, inside the Laurisilva of Madeira, a laurel forest listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its grassy clearings are dotted with giant til trees, some of them several centuries old, with twisted trunks covered in moss and ferns.
When the mist rolls in, which happens often, the trees appear and disappear in the fog and the forest feels truly enchanted; on clear days cows graze in the sunlit meadows. Many visitors ask how to get to Fanal Forest without a car, as the mountain roads are narrow and public buses do not reach it; this Fanal Forest tour solves that with a guided stop of about 30 to 45 minutes. Wear a warm layer, as it is much cooler up here.
