Full Description

The Sanctuary of Fátima

Fátima is one of the world's major Catholic pilgrimage sites, and people searching for a Fátima tour from Lisbon usually want both the history and the atmosphere. In 1917 three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary here, and today millions of visitors come each year to the Sanctuary, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Chapel of the Apparitions.

Your guide explains the events of 1917 and the meaning of the different areas, then leaves you time for reflection at your own pace, roughly an hour and a half in total. Visitors of every faith are welcome. Dress modestly and keep your voice low in the chapel, and note that the sanctuary is busiest on the 13th of each month from May to October.

Batalha Monastery

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, known as Batalha Monastery, was begun in 1386 to thank the Virgin for the Portuguese victory over Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of late Gothic and Manueline architecture, with lacy stone tracery, a vaulted chapter house and cloisters.

At the back of the church, the Unfinished Chapels are open to the sky, their carved pillars left incomplete, and they are among the most photographed sights of the visit. The stop lasts about 40 minutes, and the guide tells the legends of the battle and how the monastery grew over two centuries. Entry fees inside the monastery, where charged, are not included in this tour.

Nazaré and the Sítio cliff

Nazaré combines a broad beach and traditional fishing life with a dramatic clifftop, the Sítio, reached by a historic funicular or by road. From the viewpoint you see the Atlantic, the town below and the fort with its lighthouse on the headland that is now known worldwide for surfers riding giant winter waves.

The large waves come mainly between autumn and early spring, and depend on the swell. The stop of about 40 minutes gives time for the view, a walk on the seafront and a look at the tradition of the fishermen's wives who wear seven layered skirts. If you wonder about the best time to visit Nazaré, winter is best for waves and summer for the beach.

Óbidos, a medieval walled village

The tour ends its sightseeing in Óbidos, a walled village that dates back to the Moorish period and was gifted by kings to their queens for centuries. The 13th-century walls, the tiled Porta da Vila gate and the whitewashed houses on Rua Direita create a scene that feels like a fairy tale, and the Óbidos day trip from Lisbon is popular for exactly this reason.

You have about an hour to walk the cobbles, look into the small shops and climb onto the walls if you like. Óbidos is also known as a book town, with bookshops in unexpected places, including an old market building. After the stop you drive back, around an hour, to Lisbon.
