Full Description

The Bodleian Library and the Divinity School

Oxford has taught students since at least 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the Bodleian Library is its great treasure house. Reopened in 1602 around an older library, it is one of the largest libraries in Britain and has the right to a copy of every book published in the country. Its Old Schools Quadrangle, with doors painted with the names of old subjects, is a highlight of any Bodleian Library tour.

Beneath it lies the Divinity School, finished in 1488 as the university's first teaching and examination room. Its stone ceiling of carved pendants and coats of arms is one of the finest in England and has appeared in several films. Access is limited in June to August, when it may not be possible to enter.

Radcliffe Camera and the University Church

Next to the Bodleian rises the Radcliffe Camera, completed in 1749 as one of the first circular libraries in England. Its pale stone dome is the symbol of Oxford and still serves as a reading room for students, so visitors admire it from Radcliffe Square, surrounded by some of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Across the square stands the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, the official church of the university since the Middle Ages, where early university meetings and degree ceremonies were held. Your guide explains how town and gown grew up side by side, and points out the best photo angles of the dreaming spires. This square is the heart of every Oxford walking tour.

Oxford's Oldest Colleges: Merton, Oriel and All Souls

Oxford University is made up of independent colleges, each with its own chapel, dining hall and quadrangles. Merton College, founded in 1264, has one of the oldest quadrangles in the university, and Oriel, founded in 1326, faces a quiet cobbled square. All Souls, founded in 1438, is unusual because it has no undergraduate students, only fellows chosen through famously difficult exams.

Your tour includes entry to one of the university's oldest colleges, where you walk through its quads and see its historic buildings up close. Which college you visit depends on opening on the day, as colleges can close at short notice for exams and events. Your guide explains the collegiate system and what it is really like to study and live inside these walls.

Trinity, Hertford and the Bridge of Sighs

On Broad Street you pass the gates of Trinity College, founded in 1555, with its lawns and elegant chapel. Nearby, a small cross set into the road marks the place where a powerful archbishop and two bishops were burned at the stake in the 1550s, one of the most dramatic chapters in the city's history.

A short walk away, Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs, completed in 1914, links its two buildings across New College Lane and is one of the most photographed spots in Oxford. Your guide shares stories of college rivalries, the strict academic dress worn for exams and the ceremonies that still shape the student year, in a lively insider's voice.

Visiting Oxford: Getting There and Best Time

How to get to Oxford from London? Direct trains from London Paddington and Marylebone take about an hour, and coaches from central London take around one and a half to two hours. If you prefer an organised Oxford day trip from London, you can choose our option with return transport, leaving Gloucester Road at 08:00 and returning around 18:00.

Is Oxford worth visiting? For its beautiful college architecture, its compact, walkable centre and the chance to hear about university life from a graduate, the answer is yes. Spring and early autumn are lovely, while summer is busiest and some buildings have limited access. Morning tours are usually the quietest, and the light on the golden stone is beautiful.
