Full Description

West 58th Street: a family-friendly start by the park

The rental shop is on West 58th Street, between Seventh Avenue and Broadway, just a two-minute walk from Central Park South. Besides lightweight adult bikes it keeps child bikes, tag-along bikes that attach behind an adult's bike, two-seat child trailers and child seats, which makes this one of the easiest ways for a family to explore Central Park together, even with very young children.

New York State law requires riders under 14 to wear a helmet, and helmets are provided; for older riders they are optional but recommended. Staff hand over the lock and send a digital map of the park to your phone. Bring the ID of at least one adult in your group, and book a few hours ahead in summer, when the most popular sizes go quickly.

The southern loop: the Pond and the East Drive

Enter the park at Seventh Avenue and turn east along the southern edge. The Pond, at the Fifth Avenue corner, is framed by the stone arch of Gapstow Bridge and the hotel towers of 59th Street, one of the classic views of the city. Just above it is Wollman Rink, an open-air ice rink in winter, and further along the East Drive is the Central Park Zoo, a fun stop for children.

This lower loop is almost flat and the drives have been car-free since 2018, so it is ideal for children on their own bikes or in a trailer. Riders travel counter-clockwise and stop at red lights at the pedestrian crossings. Allow about 20 minutes with photo stops before you reach the middle of the park.

Bethesda Fountain and the Lake

At 72nd Street the drive passes Bethesda Terrace, the park's grand two-level stone terrace of the 1860s. Lock your bikes and walk down to Bethesda Fountain, where the bronze Angel of the Waters, unveiled in 1873, celebrates the arrival of clean water in the city. Children love watching the rowboats on the Lake and the street musicians who often play under the arcade.

From the water's edge you see the cast-iron Bow Bridge and the woods of the Ramble. Cycling is not allowed on the terrace, so the fountain is a natural break: fifteen to thirty minutes for a snack and photos. This is the heart of any Central Park bike ride, and it fits easily into the default two-hour rental.

Strawberry Fields and the West Drive

Cross the 72nd Street drive to the west side and you reach Strawberry Fields, a landscaped memorial garden opened in 1985 near the West 72nd Street entrance. Its round black-and-white mosaic, often covered in flowers, sits among quiet lawns and trees; leave the bikes at the edge and walk in for a few calm minutes.

The ride back south along the West Drive is gentle and shaded, passing the rock outcrops and meadows of the western park before you exit near Columbus Circle and return to the shop. With two hours this loop is comfortable for families; if you take three or five hours, carry on north instead toward the Reservoir.

The Reservoir and the quiet northern trails

With a longer rental the park becomes calmer. North of 86th Street the Reservoir spreads over 106 acres, with a running track that is reserved for runners and walkers; lock your bike and walk to the fence for the famous view of the Midtown skyline over the water, beautiful in the soft light of morning or late afternoon.

Beyond it the loop climbs toward the North Woods, the Great Hill and Harlem Meer, where the park feels like countryside. Lock up by the drive and walk into the Ravine to hear its small waterfalls. The complete loop is about 6.1 miles (9.7 km); with a five-hour or all-day rental you can ride it at an easy family pace, with long stops along the way.

How long does it take?

The default option is two hours, ideal for the southern loop. You can also rent for one, three or five hours, or for the whole day.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You collect and return the bikes at the shop on West 58th Street, two minutes from Central Park.

A lightweight bike for two hours in the default option, a helmet, a lock, a digital Central Park map, a ten-minute grace period and, on request, child bikes, tag-alongs, trailers or child seats.

Is the price per person or per group?

It is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option, including the child rate.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Yes for families: children can ride their own bikes, a tag-along, a trailer or a child seat. Adults need to be able to ride a bicycle.

What should I bring?

One adult's ID, comfortable clothes, water and snacks for the children, sunscreen in summer and warm layers in winter.
