Full Description
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
The Kennedy Space Center has been the launch site for American crewed spaceflight since the 1960s, from the Apollo missions to the Space Shuttle era and today's commercial launches. The Visitor Complex, on Merritt Island about an hour east of Orlando, is the public part, with exhibits, films, simulators and displays that trace the history of space exploration.
A Kennedy Space Center tour from Orlando is one of the most popular day trips in Florida, because the complex is large enough to fill a whole day. With the entry ticket in your main option you can decide your own order, spend longer at the exhibits you love and take breaks in the on-site cafés. The site is a working launch facility, so some areas can close on operational days.
Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Rocket Garden
Space Shuttle Atlantis is the star of the complex. The real orbiter, which flew 33 missions, is displayed as if still in orbit, and you can walk beneath and around it, with interactive exhibits explaining how the shuttle was built and flown. Many visitors find it the most impressive moment of the day.
The Rocket Garden is an outdoor collection of real rockets from the early space programme, standing upright among the palms, and it is a favourite for photographs. Nearby exhibits and simulators let you experience a launch, and astronaut talks are often scheduled during the day. Check the schedule when you arrive so that you do not miss a show.
The launch area, the Saturn V rocket and Gateway
A bus tour usually carries visitors from the Visitor Complex toward the launch area, with photo stops near launch pads and the huge Vehicle Assembly Building. At the Apollo and Saturn V exhibit you can see a Saturn V moon rocket lying on its side, one of the largest machines ever built, along with Apollo-era mission control displays.
The newer Gateway complex looks ahead to deep-space exploration and the future of spaceflight. Between the exhibits, films and displays, there is enough to fill a full day. Bus operations and exhibit openings can change, so use the day to explore at your own pace and follow the on-site signs and staff advice.
