Full Description
Počitelj, the Ottoman hill town
Počitelj rises in stone terraces above the left bank of the Neretva River, about half an hour south of Mostar. A fortress stood here in the medieval Bosnian kingdom, and after the Ottomans took it in 1471 the town grew into a garrison and trading post. Its skyline still looks almost untouched: the Hajji Alija Mosque from the 1560s, a clock tower, the old hammam, a madrasa and the hexagonal tower at the top of the walls.
On this Počitelj tour you have about an hour to walk the cobbled lanes with your guide, past pomegranate and fig trees, and climb toward the fortress for the classic view over the river. The steps are uneven and steep in places, so comfortable shoes help. Počitelj is protected as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has long been a favourite of painters, so the light at every turn feels made for photos.
Kravica Waterfall
Kravica Waterfall lies on the Trebižat River near Ljubuški, about 40 kilometres south of Mostar. Here the river spills over a wide semicircle of travertine, a soft rock built up over thousands of years from minerals in the water, and falls roughly 25 metres into a broad green pool. Moss, ferns and fig trees grow between dozens of cascades, and wooden walkways lead to viewpoints and the lower basin.
The tour gives you about two hours here, the longest stop of the day. In the hot Herzegovinian summer you can swim in the cool pool below the falls, while in spring the water volume is at its most powerful and in cooler months you feel the mist on your face. The entrance fee is mandatory and paid on site. Is Kravica Waterfall worth visiting? For most travellers it is the highlight of a Mostar day trip.
Blagaj, the Buna River spring and the Dervish House
At Blagaj, about 12 kilometres from Mostar, the Buna River bursts out of a cave at the foot of a sheer cliff some 200 metres high. It is one of the most powerful karst springs in Europe, and the emerald water is cold even in summer. Beside the spring stands the Blagaj Tekke, a dervish house built in the Ottoman period in the 16th century, with wooden balconies leaning over the water. Above the cliff are the ruins of the medieval Stjepan Grad fortress.
You spend about an hour in Blagaj with your guide, learning about the spiritual life of the tekke and walking along the riverside terraces. Entry to the Dervish House is optional and paid on site; inside, visitors dress modestly, and women cover their hair and shoulders, with covers usually available at the entrance. The calm of the place makes it a favourite stop on any Herzegovina day trip.
Fortica Hill Skywalk above Mostar
Fortica is the hill that rises east of Mostar, and on its upper slopes a glass-floored viewing platform, the Fortica Skywalk, juts out over the edge. From here you look straight down onto the city, follow the Neretva River as it winds past the Old Town, and see the mountains of Herzegovina folding away toward the horizon. It is the best place to understand the setting of Mostar in its narrow valley.
The tour spends about 30 minutes at the top, with time for photos on the glass platform and a short walk around the viewpoint. If you want more adrenaline, you can book the optional zip line of about one kilometre, which glides down the hillside with the city spread out below; it is paid separately on site. Late afternoon, when the light softens over Mostar, is a lovely moment to be here.
The Buna Channel
Shortly after leaving Mostar, the route follows the Neretva south to the village of Buna, where the Buna River joins the Neretva. Here the water spreads into a series of small channels, cascades and pools between old stone mills and Ottoman-era bridges, creating a quiet, green corner that few visitors know about.
This is the first stop of the day, a 15-minute photo break that sets the tone for a trip built around water and stone. Your guide explains how the rivers of Herzegovina shaped life in the valley, from irrigated orchards and tobacco fields to the mills that once ground grain for nearby towns. It is a perfect warm-up before Počitelj, and in spring and early summer the colours of the water and the fresh green banks are at their brightest. Keep your camera ready, because the reflections in the calm channels on a sunny morning are especially beautiful.
