Full Description

Potočari Memorial Centre and cemetery

Potočari lies a few kilometres from Srebrenica and was the base of the Dutch battalion of the United Nations forces in July 1995. After Bosnian Serb forces took Srebrenica, thousands of civilians sought protection here. In the following days, more than eight thousand Bosniak men and boys were killed in one of the worst atrocities in Europe since the Second World War, later recognised as genocide by international courts.

The Potočari Memorial Centre, established in 2003, includes a large cemetery where victims are laid to rest as they are identified, and more than six thousand people are now buried there. Each year on 11 July, new victims are buried in a solemn ceremony. Visitors who search for a Srebrenica memorial tour from Sarajevo come to pay respect, and the cemetery is quiet and dignified.

The museum and memorial room

Next to the cemetery, the former battery factory that housed the UN battalion now contains a museum and memorial room. Exhibits explain the siege of Srebrenica, the fall of the enclave and the events that followed, using photographs, documents, personal belongings and recordings of survivors' testimonies. Some displays show the everyday objects of people who lived through the siege.

The visit is emotionally demanding, and the guide provides context without sensationalism, helping visitors understand how the events unfolded and why remembrance matters. Visitors are asked to be silent and respectful in the memorial spaces, and photography may be restricted in some areas.

Srebrenica town and the road through eastern Bosnia

After Potočari, the trip continues to Srebrenica itself, a town in the hills of eastern Bosnia that was once known for its silver mines and spa. Today it is a quiet town still marked by the war, and the visit shows how communities have tried to rebuild and live together. Lunch is taken here, as few restaurants are nearby.

The drive to Srebrenica takes about two and a half hours from Sarajevo, through mountain scenery and past villages, with stops as the guide explains the history of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian War. Many travellers searching for a Srebrenica day trip want this context to understand what happened, and the journey provides it.

A guide who lived the war

The guide is a veteran of the Bosnian War, so you hear an account informed by lived experience rather than a script. This includes answers to your questions and explanations of local politics, memory and coexistence today. The small size of the group, limited to eight, makes conversation easier.

The day starts at 8:00 am in central Sarajevo, near the Ferhadija pedestrian street, or with hotel pickup depending on your stay, and returns around 6:00 pm. A sandwich lunch is included, with vegetarian and vegan food on request. Dress modestly and comfortably, as the memorial is a place of mourning.
