Full Description
The pastry atelier and your class
The class takes place in a large, modern cooking atelier on Rue Buffon, with a professional kitchen, wide worktables and two bathrooms. Your chef or instructor has already prepared the measurements, so the time is spent on the fun part: whisking the meringue, folding in almond flour and sugar, filling a pastry bag and piping neat rounds onto trays. Children love watching the shells rise and form their little ruffled feet in the oven.
While the shells bake and cool, you prepare the filling and then sandwich and garnish your macarons. If the group is quick and you ask, the chef can also demonstrate a ganache, a custard cream or another filling. With only up to 8 participants, everyone gets attention, which makes this macaron class Paris families book again and again for a relaxed, delicious couple of hours.
The Parisian macaron: a little history and technique
Almond biscuits called macarons have been baked in France for centuries, but the double-decker Parisian macaron, two smooth, crisp shells joined by a soft filling, became the city's signature sweet in the twentieth century. Today pastry shops across Paris display them in every colour, from pistachio green to raspberry pink.
The secret lies in the technique. The meringue must be just firm enough, the batter folded until it flows like lava, the shells left to rest so a thin skin forms, and the oven temperature carefully controlled. Your pastry chef explains each step in simple words, so children understand why the shells crack or spread and adults leave with tips to try a French macaron recipe again after the trip.
The Jardin des Plantes and the neighbourhood
The atelier sits beside the Jardin des Plantes, the botanical garden of Paris founded in 1635 as a royal garden for medicinal plants. Its long avenues of plane trees, glasshouses, rose garden and small zoo, one of the oldest in the world, make it a perfect place to stroll with children before or after the class.
Also within the garden is the Grand Gallery of Evolution, where a parade of life-size animals fills a soaring nineteenth-century hall. Just across the street stands the Grand Mosque of Paris, opened in 1926, with its Andalusian-style courtyards and gardens. The Latin Quarter and the Seine are a short walk away, so the class fits easily into a day on the Left Bank.
Practical tips for families
At least one adult per family must take part with their own ticket, and family members without a ticket cannot stay in the atelier to watch. Children under 5 must be supervised by an adult throughout. Macarons contain almonds and eggs, so tell the chef about any allergies before the class starts.
Aprons are provided. Arrive on time: after 20 minutes of delay your class may be compromised, as other families follow a tight schedule. Sessions start at 09:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 16:30, so you can choose a morning class before a museum or an afternoon session after the garden. Is a macaron class worth it with kids? It is one of the best things to do in Paris with children on a rainy day, and they leave proud of what they made.
