Full Description

St. Catherine's Church, where the walk begins

The tour meets at the main entrance of St. Catherine's Church, the Hauptkirche St. Katharinen, one of Hamburg's five principal churches and the one that stands closest to the port. Its foundations go back to the 13th century and its tower, topped by a baroque spire, carries the oldest surviving church tower base in the city. Legend says the gold on the spire came from the treasure of a notorious pirate executed in Hamburg in 1401, and the guide uses that tale as the opening of the evening.

Being the church of the sailors and the port district, St. Catherine's has plenty of grim stories of its own, from storm floods that reached its doors to the bombing of 1943 that gutted the building. The walk sets off from here into the warehouse district as the light fades, which is exactly when the brick facades start to look different.

The Speicherstadt canals and bridges after dark

The Speicherstadt is the world's largest historic warehouse complex, built between 1883 and 1927 on oak piles in the river, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. By day it is a photographers' favourite; at night, when the warehouses are lit from below and the canals turn black, it becomes the perfect stage for a ghost tour. The guide leads you across the bridges and along the quays, pointing out where barge men drowned, where fires started and where the tides once trapped workers in the lower floors.

Between the stories you hear the real history as well: the Hanseatic merchants, the free-port years and the thousands of dwellings demolished to build the warehouses, whose inhabitants, as the guide likes to say, did not all leave willingly. Expect to spend most of the two hours here, walking slowly with stops at each location.

Witch trials, plague and the devils of the Hanseatic city

Hamburg was a trading city ruled by sober merchants, but its chronicles are full of darker chapters, and the guide weaves them into the walk: the witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries, the plague years that filled the churchyards, the executions outside the city gates and the sea monsters that sailors swore they had seen beyond the Elbe. There is the devil who supposedly helped build a church and was cheated of his reward, and the ghosts said to walk the quays on stormy nights.

These are told as legends, with a wink and a shiver, which is why the tour is recommended for adults and teenagers rather than younger children. The stops are chosen so that each tale is told at the place it belongs to, often in an alley or courtyard that you would walk past without noticing by day.

Puzzling signs and symbols on the old buildings

One of the most interesting parts of the evening is learning to read the warehouses themselves. The brick facades carry carved house marks, merchants' symbols, strange faces and dates, as well as the painted letters of long-vanished trading firms, and the guide explains what they meant: who owned which block, which goods were stored behind which door, which signs were meant to ward off bad luck or fire. Many of them are easy to miss until someone shows you where to look.

The walk ends after about two hours in the warehouse district, within a short distance of the Baumwall and Meßberg metro stations and the restaurants of HafenCity, so you can finish the evening with a late dinner nearby. Bring a torch or use your phone light to see the carvings in the darker corners.
