Full Description

Elbphilharmonie and the Kaiserkai

The walk begins at the corner of Sandtorkai and Kaiserkai, a few steps from the Elbphilharmonie, the concert hall opened in 2017 that sits like a glass crown on top of a 1960s brick cocoa warehouse at the tip of HafenCity. Our guide explains the building from outside: the wave-shaped roof, the curved glass panels, the public Plaza at the join between brick and glass, and the long construction story that made it the most talked-about building in Germany before a note was played.

From here the Kaiserkai runs along the Sandtorhafen, the oldest artificial harbour basin of Hamburg, dug in 1866 and now used by traditional sailing ships and steamers. The contrast between the new apartment blocks on the quay and the masts of the old ships sets the theme for the whole tour: old and new, side by side. Expect about 20 minutes here before the walk moves on.

Model railway, coffee roastery and spice museum

Walking along the first warehouse blocks of the Speicherstadt, the guide points out three of the district's best-known attractions from outside: the warehouse that houses the world's largest model railway exhibition, the old coffee roastery whose smell drifts into the street, and the spice museum, where the goods once stored here can still be smelled and touched. Entry is not included and the walk does not go in, but the guide tells you what each one offers and how long to allow if you return later.

These blocks also show the warehouse architecture at its best: red brick, green copper turrets, hoists under the gables and doors on both the street and the canal side. The guide explains how coffee, tea, cocoa and spices arrived by barge and left by cart, and why the free port made Hamburg the trading hub of northern Europe.

Sandtorhafen terraces, the view across to the warehouses

The route reaches the stepped waterfront terraces on the Sandtorhafen, completed in 2005 as the first public square of HafenCity and designed to be flooded at very high tides. From the top steps you look straight across the water at the row of Speicherstadt warehouses, with the Elbphilharmonie to the west and the traditional ships moored below, which is why this is the classic photo stop of any Speicherstadt tour. The guide explains the flood-protection concept of the whole new district, with buildings on raised plinths and streets at two levels.

About 15 minutes are spent on the terraces. In summer the steps are full of people reading and eating lunch, and in winter the view of the lit warehouses in the early dusk is worth the cold. From here the walk crosses a bridge into the warehouses themselves.

The Speicherstadt courtyards on the Holländischer Brook

The heart of the tour is the Speicherstadt itself, the largest warehouse complex of its kind in the world, built between 1883 and 1927 on oak piles and listed by UNESCO since 2015. The guide leads you to the inner courtyards on the Holländischer Brook, tall brick spaces with iron galleries that feel like the nave of a cathedral, and makes the point that in Hamburg it was never the church but trade and money that ruled daily life. The merchants who ran it, nicknamed pepper sacks for their wealth from spices, are the real subject of this part of the walk.

You hear how the free port worked, how goods were sampled and resold without ever paying duty, and how the warehouses still store carpets, tea and coffee today. Allow around 40 minutes here, the longest stop of the tour and the one most guests remember.

HafenCity, the newest district of Hamburg

The walk ends in HafenCity, the district built since the early 2000s on former dock land along the Elbe and the largest inner-city development in Europe. After the brick of the Speicherstadt its glass and steel come as a deliberate contrast, and the guide shows what is architecturally possible today: offices with green roofs, apartment blocks heated by the district's own energy network, floating pontoons and public terraces on every basin. The quarter is still being built, so each visit shows something new.

The tour finishes after about two hours within a short walk of the Überseequartier and Baumwall metro stations, so it is easy to continue to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, a harbour boat or the restaurants of the Überseeboulevard. The guide is happy to point you to the best next step.
