Full Description
The Elbphilharmonie: Hamburg's new landmark
Opened in January 2017, the Elbphilharmonie is one of the most acclaimed concert halls in the world. The Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron placed a shimmering glass structure, shaped like a wave or a sail, on top of Kaispeicher A, a brick warehouse from the 1960s that once stored cocoa, tea and tobacco. The building rises to 110 metres, making it the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg.
Its façade is made of around 1,000 curved glass panels, many printed with tiny dots to control light and heat. An Elbphilharmonie tour with a guide explains the long and famous construction story, the acoustic design and why the building has become the symbol of modern Hamburg.
The Tube and the Plaza
Visitors enter through the Tube, an 82-metre curved escalator that rises through the old warehouse and seems to disappear into a point of light. It is one of the longest escalators in Western Europe and a highlight of the visit, especially for children.
At the top lies the Plaza, a public viewing level 37 metres above the ground, between the warehouse and the glass building. A balcony runs all the way around it, offering 360° views of the harbour, the Speicherstadt, the old town spires and the Elbe. Plan about 30 to 45 minutes here. With a guide you avoid the queue for Plaza tickets at busy times.
HafenCity and how to get to the Elbphilharmonie
The Elbphilharmonie stands at the western tip of HafenCity, Hamburg's new harbour district, next to the historic Speicherstadt warehouses. After the tour, you can walk along the waterfront promenades, visit the International Maritime Museum or continue to Miniatur Wunderland.
If you are wondering how to get to the Elbphilharmonie, the nearest U-Bahn station is Baumwall on the U3 line, about a 10-minute walk away, and harbour ferries stop right in front of the building. Elbphilharmonie Plaza opening hours are long, usually from morning until late evening, and sunset is the best time to visit for the view.
