Full Description

List harbour: Germany's northernmost port

List is the northernmost village in Germany, and its small harbour on the sheltered east side of Sylt is the starting point for this seal cruise. Fishing boats, ferries to the Danish island of Rømø and excursion boats share the quay, and kiosks sell fresh fish rolls and local seafood. Behind the village lie the great shifting dunes of the Listland nature reserve.

How to get to List on Sylt: buses run regularly from Westerland, the island's main town, and take about half an hour, while drivers can park near the harbour. If you are planning a Sylt seal tour, arrive early to walk along the quay and look across the Wadden Sea before boarding. Many visitors combine the cruise with an afternoon in List or a drive through the dunes.

Wadden Sea National Park

The Wadden Sea is the largest system of tidal flats in the world, stretching along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Around Sylt it is protected as the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and, since 2009, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Twice a day the tide uncovers vast areas of mud and sand, channels and sandbanks that feed millions of migrating birds every year.

Leaving List, the boat follows the deep tidal channel between Sylt and Rømø, passing the Ellenbogen, the hooked northern tip of Sylt with its two lighthouses and lonely beaches. Your fisherman guide explains how the tides work, why the mudflats are so rich in life and how the park protects them. On a clear day you can see far across to the Danish coast.

Seals on the sandbanks

The highlight of the trip is the seal colony. Two species live here: the harbour seal, smaller with a round head and spotted coat, and the grey seal, larger with a long nose, the biggest predator living in Germany. At low tide they haul out onto the sandbanks to rest and warm up, and the boat slows down at a safe distance so you can watch them without disturbing them.

Harbour seal pups are born on the sandbanks in early summer, while grey seals give birth in winter, so every season has something special. Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens for the best views. Is a seal-watching cruise on Sylt worth it? Yes: seeing wild seals in their natural setting, framed by the open sea and the dunes, is one of the most memorable things to do on the island.

Life on a traditional fishing boat

Rather than a large ferry, this cruise uses a rustic fishing vessel, giving the trip a genuine maritime feel. The fisherman guide on board shares stories of fishing in the North Sea and shows creatures from the sea floor, such as starfish, crabs and shellfish, which children can look at closely before they are returned to the water.

The boat has open deck space for watching and a sheltered area for cool or showery days. The best time for a seal tour on Sylt is from spring to autumn, when departures are frequent and the sea is usually calm, and afternoon trips like these often catch the soft light over the Wadden Sea. Dress warmly, as it is always cooler and windier on the water than on land.
