Full Description

The Port of Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg lies about 100 kilometres inland on the River Elbe, yet it is Germany's largest seaport and one of the biggest in Europe. Every year thousands of ships call here, and the container terminals, with their towering cranes, handle millions of containers bound for every continent.

From the boat you see the huge dry docks where ocean liners are repaired, the shipyards on the southern bank and the busy traffic of tugboats and ferries. A Hamburg harbour tour gives you a scale that is impossible to grasp from land, and the commentary explains how the port shaped the city's wealth for over 800 years.

The Speicherstadt warehouse district

Built between 1883 and 1927, the Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world based on timber-pile foundations. Its red-brick neo-Gothic warehouses, with turrets and gables, line a web of narrow canals called Fleete. Coffee, tea, spices and carpets were once stored here, and some traders still use the buildings today.

Together with the nearby Kontorhaus district and its famous Chilehaus, the Speicherstadt became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. Gliding through the Fleete on a Speicherstadt boat tour is the highlight of the trip. Passage through the canals depends on the tide, as the water level in Hamburg changes by several metres each day.

HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie

Next to the Speicherstadt rises HafenCity, one of Europe's largest urban development projects, where old docklands have been transformed into modern apartments, offices, promenades and museums. Its crowning landmark is the Elbphilharmonie, opened in 2017, whose wave-shaped glass top sits on a brick warehouse at the tip of the peninsula.

Seen from the water, the concert hall seems to float above the Elbe. After the cruise you can walk from the piers to HafenCity in about 15 minutes, visit the Plaza of the Elbphilharmonie or explore the Maritime Museum. The best time for a Hamburg harbour cruise is late afternoon, when the light turns the brick buildings golden.
