Full Description

Along the Danube from the Parliament

The tour starts in District V, a few minutes' walk from the Hungarian Parliament, the vast neo-Gothic landmark completed in 1904 on the Pest bank. From here the vehicle follows the Danube, and your guide introduces the river that divides the city: Buda with its hills and castle on the west bank, flat and lively Pest on the east. The two towns and Óbuda were only joined into one city in 1873.

Driving along the embankment you see the chain of bridges and the riverside panorama that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage site in 1987, including the Chain Bridge, the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest, opened in 1849. This first part of the Budapest guided city tour gives you the layout of the capital, which makes it much easier to explore on your own in the days that follow.

Castle District walk in Buda

The first stop is the Castle District on Castle Hill, the oldest part of Budapest and the seat of Hungarian kings since the thirteenth century. Here you leave the vehicle for a short guided walk through the Old Town, with its cobbled lanes, Baroque houses painted in pastel colours and the Holy Trinity Column, raised after the plague epidemics of the early eighteenth century.

The walk leads to Matthias Church, whose roof of glazed coloured tiles is one of the symbols of the city, and to Fisherman's Bastion, the white terrace of towers built between 1895 and 1902, where the view over the Danube and the Parliament is breathtaking. Many visitors ask whether the Castle District is worth visiting: the answer is yes, and this walk shows you the spots you will want to return to. Entrances are not included and some stairs are involved.

Elizabeth Bridge, Central Market Hall and the Great Synagogue

Back in the vehicle you cross the Elizabeth Bridge, a slender white suspension bridge at the narrowest point of the Danube in Budapest, with Gellért Hill and its Liberty Statue rising above the Buda end. The original bridge was destroyed in 1945 and the present one opened in 1964, and the crossing gives one of the best views of the river on the whole tour.

On the Pest side the route passes Central Market Hall, the huge market of 1897 with a roof of colourful tiles, where locals shop for paprika, salami and fresh produce. Next comes the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, built in the 1850s in a striking Moorish Revival style with twin onion-domed towers. You see both from the vehicle while your guide explains their stories, so you know where to return for a longer Budapest Central Market Hall visit.

City Park and Heroes' Square

The drive continues to City Park, the green heart of Pest. Along the way you pass the domes of the great thermal bath, one of the largest medicinal bath complexes in Europe, opened in 1913 and fed by hot springs from deep underground, and the Budapest Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world. Your guide explains the city's spa culture and the best time to try the baths.

Then comes the main stop in Pest: Heroes' Square. The Millennium Monument was begun for the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian state in 1896, with the Archangel Gabriel on a 36-metre column and, in two curved colonnades, statues of the founding chieftains and great figures of Hungarian history. The square is framed by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art. You have time for photos and a short walk before rejoining the vehicle.

Andrássy Avenue, the Opera House and St. Stephen's Basilica

The return to the centre follows Andrássy Avenue, the most elegant boulevard in Budapest, lined with neo-Renaissance mansions and, underneath, the oldest underground railway on the European continent, opened in 1896. Both the avenue and the little metro line are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Halfway along stands the Hungarian State Opera House, completed in 1884 and famous for its gilded interior.

The tour ends close to St. Stephen's Basilica, whose 96-metre dome matches the height of the Parliament, and back near the starting point in District V. By then you will have seen the main sights of a classic Budapest half day tour and will know exactly which museums, baths and viewpoints you want to visit in more depth during the rest of your stay.
